I have a ton of DSF files. Plex picks them up and play them, however, Plex does not extract the embedded metadata. JRiver has not problem and recognises all data.
I have this option enabled and all other files (mostly FLAC, including 24bit/192KHz) are fine with metadata. The only problem is with DSF files (DSD). As I do not own any DFF files, I do not know whether they have a similar problem. I understood that Plex does not recognize or does not play DFF files
My files came with metadata when I bought them (NativeDSD, HDTracks, etc.) and Very often I changed a lot with JRiver. IT is true that the file naming structure is not very revealing, but for JRiver no problem. So far Plex has not extracted 1 dsf file correctly. Up to 99% of the FLAC files are fine.

Can you provide a sample file please. Also, please provide your Plex logs, preferably after adding a new .dsf album or tracks. You will find a log download button in Plex settings->server->help, attach the resultant .zip file here please. Also, just to be clear, what exactly do you mean by “So far Plex has not extracted 1 dsf file correctly”?
I have done a “clean” upload to library of one DSD (dsf file). The result is that Plex puts the album in the library but without the metadata (all Unknown Artists, Unknown album). The title track are correct (in my settings embedded tags are taken into account.
I attach the log files.
“So far Plex has not extracted 1 dsf file correctly”. By this I mean that none of these albums have either Album title or Artists wrong and often the title tracks are the file names. No Album Art/Poster.
The dsf files play fine through Plex, but with all Unknown Artists and Album Titles and no Posters, it is hard to navigate.
Thx. As long as Plex preserves my embedded metadata, that would be nice. On a different note, I am not impressed by the added value of Gracenote etc., if you have your basic metadata in order.
Hi,
May I know if this problem has been resolved? I have exactly the same problem on dsf music files even the Album Artist tag is filled.
Thanks!
The reason I thought it is an issue in Plex is that I can see the proper meta data in all my dsf files by other tag3 editors. The data can also be recognized by other media servers such as MinimServer.
When you mentioned Gracenote, does it mean Plex will try to match the data with Gracenote during the scanning even I set the option of using local media tag? Which mean that the meta data embedded in the file must match with the Gracenote database or otherwise Plex will refuse to use them?
Thanks!
Very sorry I’m a bit confused on your answer.
I don’t need the reviews. Moreover, I have the local cover art jpg file in the folder and Plex can show it now. (BTW, sometimes I found it shows the wrong picture)
Are you saying that when Plex takes the tags data from my file, it will compare them with Gracenote database and will show unknown Album and Unknown Artist in the case that there is one single piece of data not matching with Gracenote?
I’m attaching one example below. See the data showed on Plex and the actual tag data in the file on a tag editor.
Thank you so much for the explanation again.
So that means there is no solution for me, although I can’t understand why Plex cannot just use the meta data in my file.
Thanks away.
Oh Sorry, do you mean I have wrong understanding of your previous explanation?
What I understand is that Plex will take out the meta data from the music file, then try to match the data with the database in Plex, and also try to match the data with the database from Gracenote. In the case that no same entry is found in both database, the file will be classified as Unknown Album and Unknown Artist.
If this is correct, then I know there is nothing I can do. What I said I don’t understand is that I found some other media servers will just take out the meta data and show in the library (without any matching process) so I don’t know the reason why Plex doesn’t have such option.
Please feel free to correct me if the above understand is wrong.
Many thanks!
Thanks for the explanation.
For me, it would be nice if there is an option in Plex to display the local media tag data directly. I think some people like me may not need the software to judge whether there is any spelling errors or incorrect names etc. In a text editor like MS Word, there is option to disable the auto spell check…
Agree to vshk … I need PLEX use my tags in DSD files (dsf), not PLEX judge what is right to me.
I have many DSD files, all tags is shown right in Mp3tag/foobar2000/kodi/emby. But PLEX won’t show correct tags from some DSD files (the same problems when only use Personal Media Artist and enable Use embeded tags). For example, I have an album with the same name of Artist/Album Arist, but one of the song show VA, and then I found just because the song’s title has “-” inside (or “-” in filename I forgot) . But for other wrong tags, I have no time to test why PLEX give me the wrong one, there is actually nothing wrong in other programs. I don’t know how PLEX deal with the tags, but I think PLEX should give the embeded tags the highest priority (if Use embeded tags checked) and do not modify anything and don’t use/modify the tags from filenames/internet.
BTW, for example, for classical music, the directory name is usually like “Beethoven - Symphonies Nos. 5 & 7 - PSO . Manfred Honeck”. But PLEX don’t know how to deal with double “-” in directory and don’t use the embeded tags. Very strange. (Actually, in filename, single/double “-” has the similar problem)
Thanks a lot !!!
Adding a “me too” to this thread. I have the tags on my DSF files the way I prefer them and would like an option for Plex to display my tags whether they match Gracenote tags or not.
I have also the same problem. And I have everything tagged properly. Also the music that I have in dsf are famous albums. Eg Queen discography. It’s impossible to be wrong tagged.
Same here,
Albums tagged properly, it seems that plex is unable to match them at all, it’s at [Unknown Artist / Unknown Album], if I match manually things don’t get much better.
Would be happy to provide logs or debug this issue

That is not the only reason that Plex/Gracenote will not match correctly. As I stated, it also depends on your TAGS and your FILE and FOLDER NAMES and any spelling errors or incorrect names etc. that you may have in any of those places.
It also depends on the information at Plex/Gracenote and whether or not your Artist/Albums are listed there.
Trumpy81, this is not correct. Depending on your settings (if you select embedded tags for your library) plexmediaserver will do the following:
- read embedded tags → construct queries to pull information from gracenote
- if 1 fails, read information from the filename/directory structure → construct queries to pull information from gracenote
There’s no reason to use both datasources and in the case of dsf files it’s obvious that the extraction of metadata is not happening. I use a specific scheme to name files and it works flawlessly for all media in my collection due to the fact that embedded metadata is extracted without problems, this just needs to be fixed for dsf files.
Same problem here with DSF files and Plex. Even after adding the Album artist field in the tags, plex is not picking up any metadata, and files it all under unknown artist / unknown album. Also in this case it’s standard well-known music. The files names and directory structure is the same as for my flac files, where it doesn’t have any issues.
I am having the same issue with the data showing in Plex. The tags are entered correctly. The FLAC and MP3 files are usually correct but I always get unknown artist on the DSF files. Use embedded tags is checked.
I hate to say “me too,” but this remains a problem in April 2018.
I have a brand new Plex server installation on a Synology DS418+, and all of my DSF files appeared in the database as [Unknown Artist] and [Unknown Album]. Most did not even have valid track names.
An example that I just added to the folder is an album that won the Grammy last year, from Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Shostakovich Symphony No. 5, Barber Adagio. Plex found nothing.
Even though Plex found NONE of the metadata tags inside the files, when I stream it to my Oppo BD-103, it correctly presents the Title, Artist, Album, and Genre.
(Sounds great, too.)
Mojo
How does this differ from the discussion “DSF metadata” here?
So right now the only “solution” seems to be naming everything correctly…
