I’m curious if there’s a way to get Plex recognize movies that were released to tie into the overall story line for the show? Normally it’s not TOO big of an issue switching over to movies, finding it, then playing it - but I’d rather them come out of the respective movie folders and be in with the show’s base folder outside of the separate seasons (I separate by genre of movies on various drives, then TV shows have their own 3 different drives).
For example: The X-Files - the first movie is set between seasons 5 & 6. I’ve got the movie in The X-Files folder to play as soon as I’m done with season 5. In the past with the media servers I had used (UMS - a branch of PS3 Media Server) it wasn’t an issue as they just sorted by folder. However now with Plex it doesn’t recognize The X-Files movie when you finish season 5. I’ve got kinda the same scenario with Gomorra. The movie “L’immortale” - it fits between S03 & S04.
The X-Files movie is a simple scenario, but there’s some other ones that are WAY more convoluted (Ronald D. Moore’s Battlestar Galactica for example).
Anyway, I’d really like to know if there was a way to do that rather than backing out and locating them just having them inserted into the timeline.
There’s no 100% straight forward solution for what you’re looking for.
Some shows list those related movies as “specials”… this is e.g. true for the X-Files movie from 1998 (also listed as special 1 on TheTVDb.com). For those movies it’s possible to store them alongside your tv shows.
Plex will however in most cases not bring those specials up when you play the regular episodes in release sequence. Therefore you’ll still need to actively pick the movie. They will however be reflected based on their air date as “on deck”.
In some other cases it can help to add the movies related to a show and that show to a same-named collection in both libraries. This way the movies will show up as related content.
Both use cases can make it at least a bit easier to go back and forth between episodes/movies of that show.
There’s a feature suggestion to allow displaying special episodes in-line with the regular episodes based on their air date (and to pick them up during playback accordingly).
