Hi,
I am in a bit of a limbo with my Synology 918+ and me being outside my home-network most of my year. The reason for my limbo is, that each time when I have to update PMS or change what ever comes to me, that always result in a Plex message that it is useless. I can then fix the problem when I am in the neighbourhood of my home-network. The consequence is that Plex is virtually useless for me.
Have not been able to find a solution, until I found a notice on Qnap stating that PMS is sort of natural/standard app - to the contrary of Synology where it is not standard and therefore are to be installed manually - so my hopes raised but I haven been able to find anything on that matter.
But if it is true, I will simply change to Qnap and live a more pleasant live ) So I am hoping for a positive confirment?
Kurt
If you don’t have an always on computer at home this won’t work for you but I personally remote into my desktop at home and when I am on that I can access my QNAP through that.
Good question and the answer is that I am not smart enough to make it work. Tried with Putty and SSH, no luck. Tried with portforwarding, no luck. Tried cleaver people, no luck.
I made Synology topic:
No answers.
So I am getting a bit desperate and trying to find a new solid solution. I dont give up because Plex is marvellous (when it work).
Kurt
Thank you for your solid answer!
I believe that means that it does not matter whether I use Qnap or Synology.
I will work with your answer and see if I can make your solution!!
Thanks Kurt
if you do have an an always on computer at home then something like TeamViewer might work. ( i don’t use that but is a pretty popular app and afaik is free for home use)
I’m fairly sure that Synology provides some applications to help with remote management. I’m not able to look just now, but I suggest going to the Synology knowledge base and looking around there.
While our household has a Synology, for once I’m making the hubby manage some technology so I’m not sure if this will do what I think it will but it’s worth looking into:
The last bit states:
Whenever you’re away from home, you can simply go to http://quickconnect.to/YourID (where “YourID” is your QuickConnect ID). You’ll then have access to your NAS’s user interface just like you would if you were at home. And if you want to access your NAS’s files on your mobile device, you can download Synology’s apps and enter your QuickConnect ID when logging in.
I think that the problem, of making a connection to the NAS, originate from the fact that PMS might have removed (or maybe altered) the portforward i have made on the router. Don’t know how or why, but it is gone; however the plex portforward exist.
Thanks for the answer.
Using quickconnect is the way I log into the NAS, but it makes something NASty when I update PMS. Maybe you can see what happens in the log I provided in my first entry?
Kurt
Thanks, it looks like that your suggestion is the one and only foolproof possibility. I am abroad right now but will come back to my “home-network” on the 14th and I will give it a try, using my neighbours wifi connection on another laptop not on the home-network.

Hi BigWheel!
I have a couple of questions that I hope you will answer:
Will an always on computer at home always keep the NAS open for PMS remote connection?
Do PMS and PMP need the same version?
I am thinking of what happens if I don’t touch the NAS and PMP update itself and I thereby have different versions.
If you’re PMS is installed on your NAS then PMS on your NAS must be configured in order for Plex apps to make a remote connection to it.
These are never the “same” version. They are updated independently. There are times, however, that you may need to have the most recent version of each in order for things to work correctly.
I have done some testing to figure out what happens when I open my syno-nas from outside my local network.
My pc was attached to the local network with PMP running perfect.
I opened a laptop and logged into my syno-nas from an external connection
A. I stopped PMS and restarted the syno-nas and the laptop.
B. This immidiately stopped the PMP from working on the desktop.
Then I reversed this backwords and restarted the PMS
A. This woke PMP up and it worked perfect on the desktop without doing anything.
My conclusion is this:
Keep the desktop connected all the time on the local network with a running PMP.
Disable auto-update of syno-nas (to avoid sudden unwanted stops).
I also did some testing on the TeamViewer, but I lost the connection and could not get the desktop to work after a couple of days. Probably has something to do with shutdown of screen, harddisks etc.
So I will go for the above conclusion next time I am away from my syno-nas. Although I am a bit worried about my isp updating the routers firmware, because that would most probably make trouble for the PMS.
