I have plex set up for remote access and it works well for audio on other networks and 4g. However when I try to stream video, although I can see my files in the library, when I try and play them I get an unable to play media error. These files will play when I’m on my own network so it’s not a file type issue. I have plex configured properly for remote access because I can stream audio files. I’m using the plex app on an android 11 phone and I have transcoding set to auto. It’s very frustrating!
Can you double-check the now-playing tile for such a remote stream from the server dashboard? Is the playback displayed as remote or indirect?
An indirect/relayed connection will only provide a limited bandwidth that might not be sufficient for your video playback (though in that case you should see a different error message). Usually this is linked to a bad remote access setup.
Hi Tom, when playing audio remotely I don’t get direct play or otherwise just the file format (see attached). I can’t play videos remotely but when playing from my own net work I get directplay (see attached also) Is this any help in solving my problem?
Do you get the same error if you set the remote video playback quality to max/original (not using automatic quality)?
If so this could imply that your server has a problem transcoding the video to the respective quality (e.g. CPU not powerful enough or if you’re using HW transcoding some not fully supported codec).
OK fixed it. Your suggestion to set the qulaity to maximum did allow me to stream videos when on other networks but not 4g.Howver when I looked at the transcoder settings in PMS I noticed that disable video transcoding was checked. After unchecking it I still couldn’t stream videos on 4g but when I set the player quality back to automatic from maximum, it all started working.
