Can the Plex Media Server on NVIDIA Shield be used without internet connection?

I normally run my Plex Media Server from my Dell PowerEdge T30 server using the Plex Media Client on my NVIDIA Shield.

I am going away and and have transfered my media to a portable USB HDD, but need some way of playing it.

TVs in hotel rooms don’t usually play USB HDD, so I thought of taking my NVIDIA Shield and using the built in Plex Media Server with the USB HDD connected.

I’ve successfuly set this up and it works, BUT it needs an internet connection otherwise it does not work.

Is it possible to use this setup without an internet connection ? If not it means connecting the NVIDIA shield to the public wifi network at the hotel.

If an internet connection is required, then this causes further difficulties. Because I cannot get it to work when connectd to an external network. I have tested this by connecting the NVIDIA Shield to the hotspot on my phone.

There is an exclamation mark with a warning saying that the “SHIELD Android TV is Currently Unavailable.”

I simply want to use the NVIDIA shield to stream the media stored on my USB HDD, connected via an HDMI cable to the TV in the hotel room.

It would be better if the NVIDIA shield did not need an internet connection, but if an internet connection is required then how do I fix the issue where it cannot find the SHIELD Android TV ?
