Can we please for the love of god get a separate encoder setting for Live TV?
I personally would love to have a separate encoder setting/bandwidth setting for Live TV verse regular content. I have nothing but problems with people streaming live tv at higher bandwidths and would love to cap that to 8mbps or so while enabling all my higher bit rate content to be accessible via direct play or even transcoding at higher bit rates.
Right now tying the two together is absurd imo.
Sharing of live TV is only available to members of your Plex Home, right? They should all be in your local network, so, in theory, bandwidth should not be an issue. Unless I’ve misunderstood something.
Some of us use our accounts while sitting at work and other venues.
Sorry, I assumed, based on this comment, that you were referring to others with whom you’d shared your server. I still don’t think I’d call a unified remote bandwidth limit “absurd.” Remote is remote, and bandwidth is bandwidth.
For your specific use case, I’d recommend investigating an overlay network (mesh VPN) such as Tailscale. You can set it up such that it appears like your remote client is accessing your server from the local network, even when you’re remote (hint: subnet routing).
It’s what I personally use for this, and it works quite well.
Problem is even with local,
For whatever reason Plex does not properly handle live tv.
If a channel is streaming mp4 7mbp it’s still trying to pull it in at an absurdly high bandwidth and even at times tripling the overall bandwidth. I have channels show up in plex with 40Mbps streams and I’ll open up the channel in Emby or the hdhomerun app and they are direct playing at 7mbps and it’s frustrating how plex is handling live tv. The features been there for years and basic functions are still just experimental
Having a separate encoder setting for live tv would let those of us with high bitrate libraries to keep properly direct playing our content while dealing with the reality that live tv is broken in so many different ways. Not even taking into account how may people with lower power machines can provide direct play content but would be stressing out trying to transcode live tv.
