Can you change the device name?

Hi all,

Apologies if this has been asked (I did search but I’m on mobile so may well have missed it!) but can we change the name of players?

They’re all named “DESKTOP-[randomString]” or in the case of Android, some random 6-character string - not a big deal but would be nice if we could name them “Office Desktop” or “Living Room TV” or whatever.

Is that a thing?

Don’t know about the browsers but with an Android device you would need to sign out of PLEX on the device and uninstall… Then delete the device in your Authorized Devices Tab… Next reinstall PLEX on the device… Under where it asks you to sign in, it will also say Continue without sighing in… Press on that and go to settings and enter a name for the device… Then you can sign into the App…

You can set the device name of Android TV devices in the Plex app. It is the first preference at the top, actually.
(at least it is there on my Shield)

Plex Media Player on Windows is using the Computer name from the Windows control panel.
(I assume there is a similar device name on MacOS.)

“Plex for Windows” is behaving the same.

I cannot tell you about the Plex clients on PS4, Playstation, Roku, or Apple TV, because I don’t use these.

Yeah saw it on Android - just checked the windows desktop and sure enough you were right. Badly-named PC!
