On the issue I’d seen unresolved topics going back 3 years or older. 5days (now 6) on this topic with no staff input.
… just a few more years should do it…lol
lol . Have you seen how responsive emby or jellyfin is?
Both of 'em suck way more than Plex - so irrelevant as far as I’m concerned.
I work-around Plex shortcomings - with manual labor if necessary.
The other ‘solutions’ are not solutions - they’re just more sucky others.
Can’t work around this.
On their tizen app it works.
Please upvote here so they can finally update the exoplayer or switch to something much better.
I have created a season of ASS subs.
I enabled Image Formats Only in the Firetv 4K Stick app and they’re in Direct Play. They also work on the Roku.
Over here, they work as expected on a 4K Stick.
The suggestion I have made to update to latest exoplayer or better yet switch to much better player, benefits everyone regardless.
You might have created a season of ASS subs but the way you might have done it compared to all the other encoders out there might be different. One of the seasons I’m watching has multiaudio and 4-5 different subs in it with PGS too (some others are external). VLC and others have no problem playing them but plex does (though it can sometimes play the simpler ones with hue issues and glitches). Don’t have a roku but the plex on apple plays it fine.
A simple enough update to latest exoplayer or better would fix the majority of the issues people are facing.
Try using subs with movement or overlapping start times and you’ll see how awful it is.
I have some non-ass subs that move around on my FireTV.
The Roku doesn’t support the ‘moving around’ commands - for some reason, but it may if they’re in an ASS package - let’s find out.
Put an episode of something on GDrive/Other (and PM me the link) with some fancier ASS subs and I’ll test 'em.
I even tried some ASS on my Android Phone - worked fine (after I enabled ‘Image Formats Only’).
Sure! I’m not home for a couple of days but I’ll send you some examples when I have the opportunity.
A new player would definatley solve the problem, the latest Exo player or better yet VLC.
I’m voting!!
Trying to watch a tv show right now and neither the plex android app nor the firetv app will play the external SSA subtitles (image burn or not). However, the web panel plays it fine.
This is getting very frustrating!
Bump for answers
There is none. Google has fixed this and many other things in their latest versions of EXOPLAYER which is the player Plex app uses. The latest EXOPLAYER master release is 2.12.0 and was released about 7 days ago.
Plex has to incorporate this latest release and update their plex app. Seeing their track record, how old their exoplayer version is, radio silence and lack of commitment, and completely focused on streaming content at the moment I would not hold my breath. This single issue is years old and they still hadn’t fixed it.
For ASS subs without overlapping timings (or positions) changing subtitle burning to image formats only fixed my problems. However, as others have noted, Plex doesn’t seem to handle overlapping timings well yet.
+1 years old feature request. Time to get it done already. This is tablestakes.
I’m thinking about giving up on Plex. Most of my content is anime with embedded .ass subs. It’s a pain when all my friends access my server and transcode for the subtitles to work. Puts unnecessary load on the server when they could direct play it if Plex team would implement it on Android. My Apple tv users direct play because it supports it. Not everyone has an apple tv. Most of my friends use fire tv and Android. I’m gonna try out jellyfin and emby because I’ve been using Plex for a while now and I’m tired of waiting. Waiting far too long for something that’s never gonna come. Goodbye Plex, I’m gonna cancel my Plex pass soon. It was good while it lasted
Work has been started on adding support in ExoPlayer. Until it’s added there, it can’t be added here. (Or Plex changes player in the app, but I can’t see that happening… )
