PLEASE update android/firetv apps to latest exoplayer! Many issues including subtitles would be resolved and comes with many core improvements. Last core update was a long time ago. Same complaints keep coming up which are all resolved by latest exoplayer versions or switching to something much better eg MXPlayer, MPV, BSPlayer, VLC.
I’d vote if I could, but I’ve already wasted my limited votes on other feature requests.
Where do I vote on this? Definately needed desperately!

Please let others know so we can finally get this happening. I would love to be able to just use Plex like it is meant to be used without having color distortion, subtitles, codecs and other glitch issues.
The app for FireTV sux in so many ways it’s impossible to even name them. This would fix 90% of the problems! VOTED!!!
Yep and the solution is pretty obvious.
Most plex users are using their TVs to view content and very large number android based/firetv, so this needs to happen and should have happened several years ago.
Some of those alternatives are also on ios so they could somewhat standardize their coding eg vlc, mxplayer, kmplayer or nplayer.
Please update the FireTV app. it is giving me many problems
Please upvote by clicking the up arrow on the left hand side of the thread title up top.
I vote yes. Please fix this.
Was it this simple? Been having so many issues with the fire TV stick, i was thinking about replacing it. First time voting, I’ve never asked for anything else from my lifetime membership!
Unfortunately, yes. Hopefully they will listen with enough votes because they haven’t otherwise.
Yes I agree. I have the latest Samsung TV and the subtitles aren’t in sync at all.
I have stated this before, but updating Exoplayer / mpv / ffmpeg is not some magic bullet. We regularly update each of these from upstream, just not with every release.
Not about a magic bullet but the latest exoplayers specifically address some of the issues faced by many people including subtitles ass/pgs. Even better swapping to other alternative players that just work and work every time (which might even make it easier as some of those alternatives are available across platforms so it could be standardized). I dont want to be explaining to my users why X feature won’t work, why subtitle isn’t showing, and so on. Hopefully, plex understands that its users want it to improve and not neglect core features such as subtitles and for it to just work like its supposed to work and across the board. And the complaints are nothing new dating back years but no obvious improvements.
I’ve also stated this before, Android will not be moving away from Exoplayer. No player is perfect, and swapping to another player simply trades off one set of issues for another. We are constantly working towards improving the playback experience, and improving codec support.
That is a decision for your side to take, and one would assume after considering your clients opinions and complaints.
VLC, just as one example, plays almost everything you throw at it and works across numerous platforms which should in one way make your coding and customization easier since the core code more or less would be the same across every platform its on. At the moment you have pretty segmented approach with different players for every platform and some like android/firetv are pretty limited.
Taking one complaint as an example, subtitles, has been going on for at least 3 years. One would assume, that is more than enough time to improve one single core feature. Then there are codec issues and more. Some of the competitors and alternatives including free ones either have had it working for a long time or rapidly improving it. Again, the objective here is to improve plex so that it becomes what it is supposed to be and just works for most everyone equally. People have better things to do, like easily consume their media, than just complain for the sake of complaining.
Plex for FireTV doesn’t function…plain and simple!
We regularly review different player engines, and as I said, none are perfect. Changing from one to another is a trade off of one set of problems to solve with another.
