Can you uninstall & reinstall PMS on NAS without loosing all data (users, libraries, etc.)?

Good Morning Guys!

Can I uninstall PMS from my Synology NAS and then reinstall the latest one without losing users/data/libray/etc.?

Or Should I just install the latest DSM 7 package and essentially update it to the newest version?

I’m asking this as I have updated my Synology NAS (RS814+) from 7.0 to 7.0.1 U2 and now Plex keeps manually stopping itself.

I can’t see anything in the logs (except it being manually stopped), do I need to enable more logging?

Additional info, the storage is also degraded as 1 of my 4 RAID 5 drives has failed and is being replaced as soon as it arrives.

Thank you,

Synology understands upgrading the installed version.

A “Manual Install” of the newer version will be recognized as an upgrade/update.

Even if you uninstall to install a lower PMS version, unless you tell the installer to delete your data (DSM 7 only) , it will always keep it intact.

Programs are stored in the Synology AppStore area while your data is stored out in the Plex/PlexMediaServer shared folder.

The status of your RAID volume will not impact upgrading PMS.

Hi Chuck,

Thanks for the swift reply.

If I install the latest .apk and want to downgrade, can I manual install a lower version? or would I need to uninstall and then reinstall the previous package?

Thank you,

Hi again Chuck,

My last question can be ignored.
I tried to update and it says my model is not supported. (Synology RS814+)

I have opened up another post to get older version or check why my PMS is crashing and will mark this one as closed.

Thank you,

@ben_mc

Your RS814+ is an Atom D2700 CPU. This is a 64 bit Intel not the 32 bit.

RS814+/RS814RP+	Intel Atom D2700	Dual Core	4	Yes	Cedarview	DDR3 2 GB

I support DSM 6 and DSM 7 (if Synology allows it) on the machine.

Hi Chuck,

Correct, I had quickly grabbed the ARMv7 that listed x14 before i wrote this post.

After I checked my specs I grabbed the x64 and updated Plex and everything is working again.

I guess there is an incompatibility somewhere for the latest DSM and the version of Plex I had. I think I read that the fil structure of DMS was “finalized” in this later version, so I guess that could explain it.

Thanks again!
