Cannot access Plex web interface locally

Server Version#: Plex Media Server v1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892 - Synology DS412+ x86_64 - build: linux-x86_64 synology - GMT 01:00

Hi,

From one day to another I have problems accessing my local Plex server. My Synology is located at 192.168.1.24. I’m not using any VPN or other fancy network configuration in my LAN. Plex is configured to listen to port 32400.

From within my own network trying to reach Plex from my laptop (http://192.168.1.24:32400/web/index.html - also tried https://), I end up in an ERR_TIMED_OUT (using Chrome with or without incognito and Safari). I’ve looked through the logs but I cannot find anything that stands out - except perhaps for this entry:

Dec 31, 2019 23:20:37.202 [0x7fc4a6bd6700] ERROR - Error issuing curl_easy_perform(handle): 7
Dec 31, 2019 23:20:37.202 [0x7fc4a6bd6700] WARN - HTTP error requesting POST http://127.0.0.1:32600/devices/discover (0, No error) (Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1 port 32600: Connection refused)

(what is it doing with port 32600?).

Anyways. Plex process is running:

ps -aux | grep -i plex
plex     12970  0.1  0.3 1089040 3164 ?        Sl    2019   0:02 /var/packages/Plex Media Server/target/Plex Media Server
admin    19379  0.0  0.0  23132   964 pts/9    S+   00:04   0:00 grep --color=auto -i plex

Looking at netstat there’s a lot of CLOSE_WAIT entries (for IPv6?) and one LISTEN for tcp6 (encompassing also IPv4? Not sure here).

(192.168.1.105 is my laptop I’m using to try to access Plex).

I’ve tried restarting Plex. I’ve tried restarting my Synology DS. No avail. I’m out of ideas of what’s causing this. Any suggestions on what to try or what to look for?

From the looks of your logs, it’s having one heck of a time keeping the internet connection up. Notice the “RTM_NEWLINK” flag. This means the adapter went down and back up.

Do you possibly have a loose connector / faulty cable?

Thanks for the quick reply. No, I’m quite sure there is no problem with the cable or connector. Looking at the more recent log I cannot see (any) entry of RTM_NEWLINK, but I agree that it looked weird in that log around 23:16:26. Perhaps that coincided with the restart of the Synology:

$ uptime
 00:42:43 up  1:24,  1 user,  load average: 1.93, 1.89, 1.78

(which should be around 23:16)

(Before I checked the content of the log files as below, I tried to access Plex again, but no success):

admin@DiskStation:/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs$ cat Plex\ Media\ Server.1.log | grep RTM_NEWLINK | wc -l
135
admin@DiskStation:/volume1/Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server/Logs$ cat Plex\ Media\ Server.log | grep RTM_NEWLINK | wc -l
0

Are there any other logs one could look deeper into to get a clue of what’s happening?

(Edit: In the com.plexapp.system.log I see a lot of timeouts. Does this provide any hint or is it just another symptom of the same root cause?)

Ok, just performed another restart of the Synology DS. Now it’s working again. I did one little change before the restart, which might help other in the future (not 100% sure it’s related, but it seems like it… read on):

In Preferences.xml I added the entry:

EnableIPv6="0"

Restarted Plex. No change. Restarted Synology DS. This happened:

The netstat output looks like below now, which is good I suppose (note that there is no tcp6 entry for 32400):

I found a similar thread earlier, that seemed to point to the exact same direction - but in that thread I think the conclusion was some VPN configuration weirdness that caused the issues.

Should it be considered a bug, since I would assume IPv4 should work just as fine (keep legacy) even if you actively do not disable IPv6?

Sorry for the delay. That would do it. I was wondering why you seem to be IPv6 based with IPv4 addresses showing everywhere. I apologize for not mentioning it first time around.

Turn off IPv6 in Control Panel - Network for the ethernet interface you’re using. With it off there, PMS won’t pick up the bad IPv6 address DSM is giving out.

I really appreciate your efforts, ChuckPA. Good advice, thanks - I do not have any use of IPv6 in this case, so I will turn it off.
