Before Christmas I used to be able to conveniently play music remotely from my Plex server to my Plex for Windows instance running on my Dell R7910 Precision workstation, from my work laptop using Plex Web at app.plex.tv, whilst working from my home office.
Unfortunately I don’t seem to be able to do that anymore, as no devices show up when I press the Select Player icon.
Is this be a recently introduced bug in Plex Web or could it be a possible network issue that I’ve recently introduced?
Over the last couple of days I have been trying to look into the issue and I’ve found that I get a bit of inconsistency when comparing different Plex players - Plex for Windows, vs the Local Plex Web vs the hosted Plex Web - even though I have run the 3 players from the same machine…
For this demonstration I am running the following clients:
- Plex for Windows v1.40.1.2823-6f60f3a7 on my workstation
- Plex HTPC v1.10.2819-abd1b0a5 on my workstation
- Plex Web v4.74.1 in Microsoft Edge (Chromium based version) on my workstation,
- Local Plex Web v4.69.1 in Microsoft Edge (Chromium based version) on my workstation.
- Plex for Tizen v5.30.1 on my 2020 Samsung The Frame TV
- Plex for Tizen v5.30.1 on my 2019 Samsung The Frame TV
The Precision workstation is running Windows 10.0.19044 (21H2), the Plex server is in a Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS VM running Plex Server v1.25.5.5492 and the two Samsung TVs are running Tizen v5.5 and v5.0 respectively.
I have a fair complex network as it is split into different VLANs - and I appreciate this could complicate matters, which is why I have ran the 3 clients on the same machine to see what issues I have. As the workstation is a physical machine it is on one VLAN, the Plex server is on another VLAN as it is one of several Virtual Machines (I run a bunch of CI build servers for curl for example) and the TVs are on a different VLAN.
I have defined the local network in the Plex server configuration as 192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0 and like I mentioned above this was working perfectly in the hosted Plex Web until about 6 or 8 weeks ago, is working not so perfectly in the local Plex Web and is working as perfectly in Plex for Windows as detailed below:

This is by far the most thorough - It sees the other 5 clients.
Local Plex Web
This sees 4 of the 5 other clients - choosing not to include the hosted Plex Web.
Plex Web at app.plex.tv
This doesn’t see any of the other clients although it used to.
