Casting from Plex Android Client to other devices in same network does not work anymore

Hi everyone,

I have Mediacenter computer attached to my television and my good speakers. This mediacenter is running MS Windows 10 and the Plex Windows Client. My Plex Server is running on a different computer with TrueNAS as OS.
I mainly use Plex for playing music on my good speakers. I do this without turning on the TV, by casting from my Android phone to my Plex Windows Client running on the mediacenter.
This used to work very well, but at some point this stopped working. I’m not sure exactly since when this stopped working, as at some point I was temporary without my good speakers, as they were gone for a repair. During that time (more than a month) I didn’t use Plex on my mediacenter anymore.
Following things might have “changed” during that time

  • Plex Client updates (both Android and Windows)
  • Plex Server updates
  • I added a password to my main account
  • I added another account for my wife
  • perhaps I forgot something

Following things have not changed:

  • my local network. The Plex Android client is properly connected to my wifi and the mediacenter is connected via ethernet to that same network / subnet (I only have 1 subnet).

I also tried casting from my Android phone to

  • Plex Web Client running on Chrome on my mediacenter
  • Plex Web Client running on Chrome on my desktop computer
  • Plex Windows 10 Client running on my desktop computer

But none of those were found by the Plex Android Client. So it seems most likely to me that the issue is with the Plex Android Client?

Can somebody please tell me how I can debug this any further? Can I for example install a telnet client on my Android phone and try to check if a specific port is reachable?

Thanks in advance,

ODB

Thanks for the response! That explains why it no longer works…

Still a very strange decision to remove this support, even if it “costs a lot of money” (I don’t really understand how it can tbh, as it was already developped and working). It was the main reason I actually bought a lifetime pass…

Anyway, I’ll try with installing Plex HTPC (which is btw pretty hard to find - try googling “plex htpc download” or try clicking that link from FordGuy61 which only shows a download for Plex Media Server).

That link shows the download as soon as you select “Windows” on the left side.

Maintaining a feature is not free.
It has to be tested after each software update. That is not free as it is done (at least partially) by paid testers.
And if there were bugs introduced by updates, these bugs have to be repaired by developers. Which also like to eat, and thus need to earn money.
