Cannot convert this item. Implementation for video decoder 'av1' not found

Either 4K Video Downloader or YouTube has started using the av1 coding format, making it at present, unplayable by Plex (at least via my web console). Is this going to be added? Can I convert in the interim using Handbrake or MakeMKV?

Or use a better player such as Plex for Windows/Mac or Plex Media Player.

I did, Plex Media Server via the Chrome web interface on the PC server itself. That is where the error was occurring. I guess I wasn’t clear. Sorry. (Also, on the Android TV player, BTW.)

Anyway, as a follow up. I have read that YouTube is rolling out av1 coding for its videos. Obviously, 4K Video Downloader is just taking what it is being given. Fortunately, VLC can convert from av1 to H.264 +MP3 (MP4), which I have just tested. The converted videos now work as expected. (There are multiple YouTube videos on how this is done.)

Let us hope Plex Dev sees fit to implement this coding standard, as it catches on. Particularly now that YouTube has gotten on board with it.

Have you tried the actual Plex PC apps that @darcilicious is recommending? The web interface on Chrome is not the same thing.

I’m not entirely sure what he is referring to. Based on the Plex documentation provided on the website, the preferred method of assessing the library on the actual server, is the web interface. Regardless, the problem also occurs on the Android TV app as of 5 mins ago. So it would seem the prudent action would be to add support on the server side, to the benefit of all the players on the network, as is currently done with all trans-coding duties. If they ignore a coding standard even YouTube is picking up, that’s only going to hurt their reputation for worry free playback, in the long run. That is how they captured the market. They won’t want to lose that.

I am referring to standalone desktop players that will play the file fine. The web browser really should just be used for administering the server, not for playback.

Plex makes many clients for many platforms.

The Plex Web interface is probably the most limited available. This is due to the limitations of the web browsers themselves.

Plex for Windows/Mac is a native Windows (or Mac) application. It’s UI looks similar to that of Plex Web.

Plex Media Player, PMP, is a separate Windows (or Mac) app targeted towards HTPC users. It has an optional interface, “TV Mode,” similar to that of AndroidTV. Also, it can passthrough audio streams to receivers, soundbars, etc.

Both Plex for Win/Mac and PMP are built using the mpv.io video player, which is more full-featured than any web browser. Many audio/video formats that transcode when played via Plex Web will direct play when using one of the native apps.

No idea if either support AV1. However, you might give them a try anyway. You might like them better than Plex web.

Confirmed av1 does not work on Plex PC app for Windows, downloaded from here: https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-app

Is there any feedback on this issue? Also experiencing the same with some of my new anime.

No. But as a workaround, you can re-encode anything using VLC. I’ve done that on several videos as necessary.

that is not ideal seeing as I just became a plex pass lifetime owner

They will likely implement the standard at some point, as it becomes more common. Thus far, I’ve only run into it with videos from YouTube. I did post a feature suggestion to implement the standard.

Chiming with the same issue - 4K AV1 video, windows app can’t play it. Server was unable to optimise it.

nb. It was downloaded using “4k Video Downloader” from YouTube. When I specified a MKV format, it came down 50% larger with a VP9 codec, but it was playable.

That size stands to reason: VP9 is roughly the same as HEVC, which is expected to be somewhat larger than AV1.

Having said that, yi would suggest you be more selective with the YouTube downloading by selecting the actual download format.

Use this Firefox extension to re-encode YouTube videos as you click to download them! And also for ‘pretty much’ any other videos you want to download. The extension has “Download Rules” you can setup; for example: You could set it up to encode AV1 videos to MP4, or mkv, etc
