Cannot Find a Server Error Message QNAP

Server Version#: 0.9.15.3
Player Version#:3.13.21

Hi there, new to Plex so apologies wrong area or question showing in-experience

Installed Plex on QNAP NAS. NAS is long standing & works a treat otherwise on other apps & devices to multiple TV’s, Sonos boxes, consoles etc. All wired connections.

Can see movies when access via PLex web pages of NAS & have set up an account. Have also installed the app on the TV & paired the account.

Error on screen says "server connection error’ …‘Not able to connect to Plex Media Server. NAS28DC1 please check your connection’

All other connections to NAS are solid, connection from Twonky to NAS is good and NAS working well.

But I am struggling to get the relationship between the TV and NAS on Plex alive. I am certain it is my understanding (or lack of understanding) rather than a problem with the NAS or TV. Would be great to get a little help or some links or support article that could get me to a working place. Many thanks in advance

I went through the Plex FAQ & results are below…

  1. You are running a current version of the Plex Media Server. Check our Downloads page for the latest version. *from QNAP Web Page it reads that the version is the latest I believe
  2. You’ve signed into the Plex Media Server using your Plex account. *yes I can see my account created & signed in
  3. Your app is signed in and connected to your account. Yes I logged in on the TV app & applied the code & message came back confirming is ok
  • Ensure you have the current version of Plex Media Server installed - Yes it is current & running, can see the movies residing on the NAS
  • Ensure that Plex Media Server is actually actively running - Yes is running on NAS & visible
  • Verify that your Server is listed on your Devices page - Yes I can see the QNAP NAS Linix logo & app & the TV app, can also see one that says Ples Web Chrome
  • Disable any VPN on your computer or router - There are none
  • Disable any proxies being used on your computer or router - Don’t believe we have any options other than standard router settings
  • Make sure you aren’t requiring secure connections on the server while using an app that doesn’t support them (see below) - again don’t think we have any special conditions, all other data on NAS is seen by other TV’s (and this TV) and Sonos and other attached devices to network

I also restarted the NAS last night (in case needed a restart) & all working fine

Then logged out of the media server (as per the FAQ) and then logged out of the App on TV.

Logged back into server & then app. Asked me to apply the code again & then message on TV came up positive that account was recognised but then came the message again saying “We couldn’t reach a media server”

Just to add, the TV & NAS are on same LAN and sitting only a couple of meters apart.

TV does link to a non managed Netgear switch but has no special configuration.
NAS plugs directly into an RJ45 port on back of the Linksys Router.

Will continue to look at FAQ and support pages but would be great to receive any help to get that magic connection made. I think I’m really close to it.

Sorry one more thing maybe useful … we have several TV’s in the house on same LAN and they all see both Twonkey and Plex when we navigate them … the Twonkey does play on all but Plex will not find content once you optioned through ‘Movies’ / ‘Recently’ etc…

Continuing to read through the FAQ’s and support pages and l;ooked at the NAS compatibility list…I noticed that the QNAP TS-410 model isn’t on there. Could this be the problem? Seems be functioning on the unit itself happily for many months but just the connection to server an issue.

Your QNAP is an old Arm model, and no longer supported, sorry

Not the news I wanted to hear but appreciate the clarity dane22, saves me wasted hours in a futile effort. Looks like new NAS time.

On a practical house keeping point of view, the installed Plex is doing a huge scan of movies. Is there a simple way to stop that? Then I guess de-install until a new shiny QNAP box arrives.

thanks

Disable PMS in QNAP AppCenter, then reboot QNAP to make 100% sure afterwards

Many thanks dane22 … will do exactly that.

Thanks again for that … I have looked at this but only to check the TS-410 eligibility.

It’s a good reference from a technical eligibility aspect. But is there a thread or forum area where Plex users review or comment on ‘best fit/spec’ to support Plex?

From a familiarity aspect I feel I will stick with QNAP. That said if there is something else world beating out there then ok as well.

From a practical point of view, sourcing my new NAS will be mainly aimed at supporting Plex media and so it would be great to find some assessment of what is best. If have to spend money on a new one, then want to get the very best one

Thanks again for the rapid support. Is very much appreciated.

I would go after an Intel based one, that supports an external videocard, since that, if buying a PlexPass, would assist with HW Transcoding

And no “Buy this” thread up here, since it always boils down to the user-case

Think I understand dane22 … so an Intel based QNAP could be a starting point.

Then you mean build/source a server with a large graphics card? This area I’m just starting to read about.

And then that would output to TV’s on the network?

Correct
