Hello, server is on ubuntu 16.04.3. everything seems to work for direct play on other clients (shield, xbone), and the same files work for transcoding for everything even web player. No subtitles.
attached are logs, but here are some seemingly relevant items I noticed:
Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): Direct Play is disabled Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): media must be transcoded in order to use the dash protocol Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/h264 Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/h264/dca Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/h264/dca Sep 05, 2017 20:02:29.851 [0x7fcd10bff700] DEBUG - MDE: Prometheus (2012): no direct play video profile exists for http/mkv/h264/ac3
Sep 05, 2017 20:02:31.215 [0x7fcd133ff700] ERROR - [Transcoder] [mp4 @ 0x1f76b60] Application provided duration: -16 / timestamp: 726984 is out of range for mov/mp4 format
The symptom is:
start to pay, it plays, with audio just fine for a few seconds, the pauses with the spinner in the middle. I am ble to sopt/pause resume (though it does not resume). I can skip ahead, it’ll play for a few seconds then stop just the same. odd. Note again also, transcoded it works, and the same move, direct play on an nvidia shield works (or xbone).
I expect this is related. A friend is unable to play except for about 10 mins. got several of the time stamp errors above but also when it died, I found this in the log:
hmmm, seems like a blip there doesn’t it? Clearly, I’ve been able to access the server via plex.tv both on and off my network, and it works in all cases that the client is not a browser. So that does not seem account for any of the issues that I can tell, does it?
I do sincerely appreciate the response, but there’s not any info except a copy pasta of a few error lines Can you tie this to my actual problem, or suggest something to check?
There are tons of those timestamp transcoder errors. most of what I am reading ties that to subs, which I’m not using.
When PMS has a DNS failure, it points to the Network Configuration OR an interruption of DNS lookup. PMS attempts to look up the closest plex.tv server by name. The result is the IP address to connect to. In your case, that name lookup failed.
You can access your server but can the server access plex.tv ?
If you ssh to it and nslookup plex.tv what are the results ?
The reason you need DNS lookup is so PMS can download the codecs for the transcoder. This is why Direct Play works but nothing else does now. When there are codec changes, PMS automatically brings down the new codecs for you the first time it needs them and caches locally.
In /etc/fstab, if you have your Plex Library on a partition other than the root, it might be mounted with noexec. That said, if you remove noexec or, even better, add the exec mount option, that would guarantee the shared libraries the codec uses don’t get the (Operation not permitted) error
The movie and it’s audio WILL play back for a couple seconds before it stops.
A remote friend (or myself playing remotely with the web player) can playback for up to 10 minutes and then it fails.
Any dive I’ve tested, Nvidia Shield (android), Fire TV, iOS, Android, other friends streaming to roku, other friend streaming to a samsung TV, all work without a problem.
Also it USED to work, and since it has worked, I have not changed anything as far as I know.
Next stream by accessing your player as if remote (the Launch button) via your Plex.tv account.
I’m going this way because the only difference is HLS versus DASH streaming protocol. It’s a totally wild ass guess but only thing different between all those.
Hi Chuck, tried with explicit exec on my library datastore fstab mount, no joy.
when you say bundles local, you mean by hitting the server (IP:port) and picking user then playing? if so, I get the same thing. starts to play for a few seconds then stops with a spinner.
Yes… the ‘bundled’ Plex/web is what comes with the server and what you get when you access it via IP:32400/web
And via Plex.tv “Launch”, which is the hosted, Hosted works but Bundled does not?
I can consistently reproduce the error noted in #2 above (remote playback transcoded using the browser client.) i notice this

Reminder, this is after playing just fine for up to 10 minutes, then it stops with the above, the client gets error about transcoder crash or failed to start.
