Hello,
I recently bought a Sony KD-65XF9005 4k TV. It’s hooked up via HDMI-ARC to my Onkyo TX-NR555 A/V Receiver. I have also connected a 5.1 Sound System to my receiver. I installed the Plex App on my TV to play my content from my PMS installed on a FreeNAS server. I noticed that there are some files I cannot play due to the audio. So far I noticed DTS and TrueHD not working. AC3 does work.
Before, I used to play everything using Kodi on my RaspBerry Pi, but since I only have RPI 3 b+ I cannot use it to play 4k content. Also, I saw some videos where the RPI 4 b+ was lagging in 4k content, so I’m hesitant to buy one yet.
I assumed that even now my receiver would do all the transcoding (I’m direct-playing everything, so everything is in its original quality). Seems that my TV is doing the transcoding and it fails to do so. When I try to play content that doesn’t work I get this error: “Playback stopped because the connection to the PMS was lost. Please check that the server is available and try again” (it’s a loose translation since my TV is in German). Obviously the connection to PMS is fine. I read in the German Sony forums that formats such as True HD, DTS-HD, PCM 5.1/7.1 or Atmos MLP won’t work via HDMI-ARC. Is that true? If so, what are my options?

Edit: Removed a section concerning an optical cable. Just read that optical cables don’t support DTS etc.

All your answers @ [INFO] Plex, 4k, transcoding, and you - aka the rules of 4k

So basically my chain (the TV) does not support HD-Audio as it cannot be played via HDMI-ARC. So the solution is to use a device that does support HD-Audio via HDMI (e.g. the nVidia Shield). Would a Raspberry Pi 4 b+ work as well?

You could choose a different audio stream, such as dd/dts 5.1 or stereo.

Yeah DTS isn’t working either all the time. I assume it’s not using the proper codec…

Some TVs do not support dts at all.

In that case you would probably need to manually convert any dts audio tracks to ac3 or aac, to avoid plex from transcoding on the fly.

Yeah that sucks :x I installed Kodi with the Plex Addon and it plays the videos and transcodes the DTS audio into some crappy 2.0 stream.
These are the supported codecs. There’s no DTS sadly. I’ll try the RPI 4 b+ before I get an expensive Shield.

  • MPEG1: MPEG1/ MPEG2PS: MPEG2/ MPEG2TS (HDV, AVCHD): MPEG2,AVC/ MP4 (XAVC S): AVC, MPEG4, HEVC/AVI: Xvid, MotionJpeg/ ASF (WMV): VC1/ MOV: AVC, MPEG4, MotionJpeg/MKV: Xvid, AVC, MPEG4, VP8.HEVC/ WEBM: VP8/ 3GPP: MPEG4, AVC/ MP3/ ASF (WMA)/ WAV/ MP4AAC/ FLAC/ JPEG

There is no cheap path to 4K nirvana.

People assume it is simple. It is not.

Actually I saw this further below:

Supported Dolby formats:
Dolby™ Digital, Dolby™ Digital Plus, Dolby™ Pulse

Supported DTS Format:
DTS® Digital Surround

Doesn’t this mean that DTS should work? I just saw that it uses the DCA Codec. Not sure if that’s standard or not.

@TeknoJunky is TrueHD the same as Atmos?

Dca is dts.

At this point you should probably post logs reproducing the problem.

Plex web - settings - troubleshooting- download logs

True hd is the hd audio.
Atmos is the extra metadata used to create the “3D” audio.

Atmos can be used with truehd (4K Blu-ray) and Dolby digital (streaming services Netflix etc)

This is the relevant part form the logs:

There is even some DTS stuff in the settings, so I assume my TV can play DTS?
