Since maybe the last hour I can’t access my server on the plex web app (app.plex.tv). It says the server is unreachable. But I can still access it on the local plex web app (127.0.0.1…)
I tried restarting the Plex Server, rebooting the whole machine, logging out/in… nothing works.
Anybody has an idea?
I just restarted the Plex Server and now the message is back to: “The server “server name” is unreachable. Make sure it’s running, double check your network, and try again.”
I have no idea what’s going on. Any help would be appreciated.
And after another restart of the Plex Server it’s back. Weird. Was it an outage on Plex’s side? I really wonder what happened, I’ve been troubleshooting for an hour and nothing worked. But now the server magically reappeared.
Anyway, seems to be fixed for now. Sorry for the noise.
I can only speculate.
Most likely scenario: your server machine has swapped its private IP address.
This can happen if you change the network adapter (e.g. from wired Ethernet to Wi-Fi) or if the router has cleared its DHCP lease table.
In which case the minimum you must do is to stop and restart the server software.
Better yet, avoid any change of network adapters or IP addresses.
Put in a reservation for your server machine in the DHCP settings in your router, so that it always gets the same IP address.
The DHCP lease table can run full without you actively changing anything.
You can thank the manufacturers of mobile devices for this.
They thought it an awesome idea to generate a different MAC address, everytime your phone connects to your WiFi.
As you can probably imagine, this will fill up the relatively small table (in domestic routers at least) which holds IP addresses and their corresponding MAC addresses, so that older records can get purged.
This behavior is the default nowadays, unless you disable it explicitly in the properties of the WiFi connection in your phone settings.
It just happened again. I can’t access my server on app.plex.tv but I can with the local web app. The players on different devices in the house don’t seem to have trouble connecting to the server to play stuff either. It’s just app.plex.tv that doesn’t work.
To address your concerns, my server didn’t change IP at all. All the devices on my network have a static IP.
