If i select a couple of movies and create a collection it works fine.
If i search for an actor. all the movies they are in that are in my movies show up. if i select these movies and try to make a collection a dialog box pops up.
"Something went wrong. Make sure the server is available and try again.
This is the web player version not the server version. The server version is shows in the General section of setting that is below your servers name.
I could not reproduce this issue. When when you are selecting movies is this on the filmography page of the actor with the actors picture on top left or the filtered view of your library?
For example if i go into library and select The Matrix movies. then click on the hamburger at the top and select add to collection. i can name the collection and it works.
if i type in the search bar the actors name, select that actor. in "Movies & Shows in my library. if i select the movies i get the error.
Also if i search for movies like “Matrix” the movies show up. i Select the movies i want. in the hamburger at the top there is no Add to Collection from that method.

I think is it actually not supposed to have the option because collections are library specific and that row can have content rom from multiple servers/libraries like ones that someone else gave you access to. I think you only even have the option because you don’t have access to other users servers. I think this is the same reason the option is not available in search results. In any case i made a report for this for dev/product team to look into.
On the filmography page you can click on your server library in the next row down “Media Libraries” you should take you to that library filtered on that actors movies.
I can understand the search and other peoples servers bit but when i click on a movie i have then click on the main actor it shows a list of movies that i own. I should be able to put them into a collection.
Have you tried making a smart collection based on the actor?
That works. And i think i like smart collections better. i didn’t realize they existed.
Yeah, they are handy. The really nice feature is that when you add new media with that actor, the collection will update automatically
Oh i see it actually seems to work if you do a movie at a time from the menu on the bottom right of individual movie poster but selecting from circle on top left then using the top header menu to add to collection does not work.
But yeah i should have suggested using smart collections. Good call @napolij
There is kind of a limitation to smart collections. Say the actor you’re looking for isn’t necessarily the lead or say the movie has a very large cast. I think smart collections only searches through say the first 4 or 5 actors in the cast listing.
I will probably never hit that limitation since i only use the main character. they are always listed first.
Makes sense, I have a number of collection for actresses I am a fan of. They usually are not a part of the main cast on tv shows but make guest appearances. They typically don’t make the cut for smart collections. Just means I have to manually add them to their collection.
