Can't Get Multiple Albums of Artist to be Recognized

Server Version#:

Running WD PR2100. I can’t get Plex to recognize multiple albums of same artist. Done: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers/Wildflowers as individual folder for each album and then:

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

/Wildflowers

/Hard Promises

As Artist Folder with subfolder for each album.

What gives? Any help appreciated.

I’m not sure I understand what you experience vs. what you’re trying to achieve.

Trying to get Plex to recognize all albums of any single artist. It’s hit and miss right now after trying both methods mentioned above.

@jeff_jones

Which artist?

I can show you, for example:

Here’s Supertramp (all are recognized)

[chuck@lizum music.2015]$ ls Supertramp
Supertramp - Breakfast in America/ Supertramp - Crisis? What Crisis?/ Supertramp - Indelibly Stamped/ Supertramp - Supertramp/
Supertramp - Brother Where You Bound/ Supertramp - Even in the Quietest Moments.../ Supertramp - Paris/ The Very Best Of Supertramp/
Supertramp - Classics, Volume 9/ Supertramp - "...Famous Last Words..."/ Supertramp - Slow Motion/
Supertramp - Crime of the Century/ Supertramp - Free as a Bird/ Supertramp - Some Things Never Change/
[chuck@lizum music.2016]$ ls Supertramp/Supertramp\ -\ Paris/
Disc 1/ Disc 2/
[chuck@lizum music.2017]$ ls Supertramp/Supertramp\ -\ Paris/Disc\ 1
01 - School.mp3 03 - The Logical Song.flac 05 - Breakfast in America.flac 07 - Hide in Your Shell.flac cover (1).jpg cover (3).jpg
02 - Ain't Nobody but Me.flac 04 - Bloody Well Right.flac 06 - You Started Laughing.flac 08 - From Now On.flac cover (2).jpg cover.jpg
[chuck@lizum music.2018]$

I use Picard for the naming. I will share my renaming rule if it helps.

Didn’t know Supertramp put out that many albums. I’m having trouble getting all of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers recognized; just their first and anthology shows up. What would be the structure for the album Wildflowers?

I AM guessing here. I don’t have any Tom Petty albums.

Should be very close to (based on my Supertramp):

Tom Petty/
  Tom Petty - Wildflowers/
    01 - Wildflowers
02 - You Don't Know How It Feels
03 - Time to Move On
    04 - You Wreck Me
    05 - It's Good to Be King
    06 - Only a Broken Heart
    07 - Honey Bee
    08 - Don't Fade on Me
    09 - Hard on Me
    10 - Cabin Down Below
    11 - To Find a Friend
    12 - A Higher Place
13 - House in the Woods
14 - Crawling Back to You
    15 - Wake Up Time
Tom Petty - All the Rest
   .
   .
   .

Only place I see possible issue is with Tom Petty and my use of just his name versus the full name. (I’m not a music buff)

Okay, I got it. Numbering and name of tracks, no other info. The only weird thing is that I put Wildflowers album under Tom Petty since it is a solo album, but Plex insists it’s a Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers album ~ renames it no matter what I do, which is okay since it at least recognizes it now, although before it didn’t. I deleted all Tom Petty, corrected naming issues, then reloaded/scanned. All good now. Thank you.

great to hear. Music matching, even without tags, works well when done this way (as they list on the support page)

FYI, Forgot to share (many other tools do this but I use Linux)

This is my renaming rule for Picard.

$if2(%albumartist%,%artist%)/
$if(%albumartist%,%album%/,)
$if($gt(%totaldiscs%,1),Disc %discnumber%/,)$if($and(%albumartist%,%tracknumber%),$num(%tracknumber%,2). ,)$if(%_multiartist%,%artist% - ,)%title%

It handles multi-disc and multi-artist

The Picard docs detail how it works.
