Can't get subtitles to automatically play when foreign audio plays

I can’t seem to get my subtitles to work properly. Whenever I am watching a movie and a foreign language audio plays it does not automatically play the native language subtitles. I have the subtitle mode under languages set to “shown with foreign audio” and the language set to english, I also have opensubtitles.org set up in the agents menu. Can anyone help me figure out what I’m doing wrong? Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

A bit more info: I’m viewing on my iPhone, iPad, and Roku TV. I have played around with a few settings and can turn the subtitles on manually without a problem. I just can’t seem to get them to play automatically during the parts of a movie when the characters are speaking a foreign language. I’ve done quite a bit of searching on this but I can’t seem to figure out exactly what is wrong.

That’s not what that setting does. That setting tells PMS to turn on subtitles when the language specified in the audio track is something other than the preferred language you have chosen. For example, you watch a movie where the audio track is (and marked) as “French”. Since your preferred language is English, it will auto-select to show the English subtitles you have for that movie.

What you are referring to are called forced subs, where subtitles are only shown when the spoken language is something other than the rest of the movie, but the main language for the movie is your preferred language. For example, someone speaks in Spanish during a regular English movie. Plex does not have the ability to know when the language being spoken is another language and then only show that subtitle. To get what you want, you need to manually find “forced” subtitles. These are special subtitle files that only have the other language. You then play this file along with your movie so that the only subtitles shown are only those in this file.
