Can't install latest update

So I found the problem.

I found this article Redirecting mentioning that a windows update broke the installer service.

I didn’t have that particular update mentioned, but I decided to uninstall the most recent updates one at a time and see if I could then update Plex.

The first one I uninstalled was KB3140768, then restarted the computer as it asked me to, and then I could update plex just fine.

I am having the same problem. I do have MS C++ 14.0, so that is not the problem.

See if you have one of these updates and try uninstalling it.

Excellent - thanks for the feedback. KB3140768 is a cumulative set of patches. May be it was the .Net one. I will mention this to the Plex Devs

I uninstalled that update and rebooted. Some part of Plex Server came up. I tried to uninstall Plex manually, but it no longer appears in the list of installed programs. Noe I try to install the Plex Server download and I get:

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the ‘Plex Media Server’ disk and click OK.

If I just click OK (since I have no disk), I get:

The file ‘’ is not a valid installation package for the product Plex Media Server. Try to find the installation package ‘pms.msi’ in a folder from which you can install Plex Media Server.

If I hit cancel, I get:

The older version of Plex Media Server cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

When I hit OK there, I get:

**Setup Failed

One or more issues caused the setup to fail. Please fix the issues and then retry setup. For more information see the log file.

I get the same result trying to install the previous version of the Plex server from 3/17.

I finally got the Media Server to install. I had to edit the registry to remove the keys that were causing the installer to think it had to remove the old version. Not for the faint of heart and don’t do it unless you really know what you are doing.

Thanks for the feedback - did you try to re-install / repair 0.9.15.6

We do appear to get this type of problem repeatedly - do you use any tool that may be deleting installation package cache files ?

Windows Updates = BANE

Good work guys!
