Cant link plex library from Apple TV with VPN enabled

I have just installed a router VPN on my router and so now my apple TV is forced through the VPN rather than being on my native IP.

However, as i expected my libraries from my media server broke when i did this which is now fixed. I am on a mac and my SMB shares from the plex library work no problem at all. However, when i go to link the actual plex library from the apple tv (it puts a QR code on the tv screen which then takes me to plex.tv/link) and enter the 4 digit code, it accepts it and says it’s linked but then when i click SAVE it says there is an error with the connection and i can not access my plex library.

I assume this is because my apple tv is trying to get out through the VPN to link the plex library via the plex.tv/link webpage and is failing, but i don’t know how to fix it.

Is anyone able to help please, do i need to forward certain ports etc to get this to work?

I found this article referencing how to link a plex library when offline, but it also doesn’t work

Many thanks.

I use a VPN app with MacOS that allows Split tunnelling, Plex is an exception. There are a few tricks to make it work. Unfortunately the Playing devices are not protected. My IOT’s are behind two NAT enabled routers so there safe.
