Ever since the update to Plex Music agent, I haven’t been able to use Fix Match to manually adjust the matching of an album. I have also tried to Unmatch, followed by Match. That also doesn’t work. Here are the results of the two procedures.
Using Fix match:
Navigate to album with incorrect artist / track info
Select Fix match…
Select correct album info from provided list
Wait forever
RESULT: No change to artist / track info
This is 100 % repeatable.
Using Unmatch / match
Navigate to album with incorrect artist / track info
Select Unmatch
NOTE: I see no visible change to the album after Unmatch, but the menu now gives me a Match option. This is different from “old” behavior where Unmatch would remove album art and artist / track info, and the album would be presented as Unknown, or something like that.
Select Match
Select correct album info from provided list
Wait forever
RESULT: No change to artist / track info
NOTE: After selecting Match, the menu options available don’t change. Fix match is not available. Unmatch is not available. The menu still shows the Match option. It looks as though the Match operation did absolutely nothing.
Verify that both Scanner and Agent are set to ‘Plex Music’ in the properties of your music library (an the ‘Advanced’ tab)
Is ‘prefer local metadata’ activated or is it not? (please don’t change it, yet)
What is the folder hierachy of this album? Is it stored in the same artist folder with other albums (which are not by that artist)?
Try this: go to the ‘Album Artist’ which is currently assigned to this album. Then ‘Refresh Metadata’ on that artist, as a whole. Afterwards wait several minutes, because this will also trigger a refresh of metdata of all albums.
Thanks for your reply. Here are my answers, to the best of my ability.
They are both set to ‘Plex Music’.
No, it is not checked.
The album is in /storage/music/piano/chopin/12_nocturnes. There is one other album in the same directory. Whether or not they’re the same artist is a bit complicated. The 12 Nocturnes album is auto-matching to an album by Fryderyk Chopin that I am not able to find on MusicBrainz, no matter how I search for it. I don’t really get it. Is there some way that I can find an ID to tell me which MusicBrainz asset an album has been matched to? The other album in this directory, 14_waltzes… is being auto-matched to an album by “Frèdèric Chopin”. I can’t even find this spelling for Chopin’s name listed as an Artist in MusicBrainz. The album info for this second album is also wrong, and I would like to switch it to this other new entry I have just created: https://musicbrainz.org/release/b2f03980-e90d-4a29-a1d1-1497f06d331e
I tried this. Now things get really weird. After I refreshed the metadata for Fryderyc Chopin, it showed no albums under that name. The 12 Nocturnes album moved to now be under “Frèdèric Chopin”. So now both albums in that directory are showing up as the same artist (who I still can’t find on MusicBrainz). However, I still can’t do either a Fix Match or an Unmatch / Match. Behavior is exactly the same as before. In addition, the descriptive text under “Frèdèric Chopin” on Plex is not for Chopin, but for some Turkish pianist: “Turkish pianist Idil Biret is a fixture of the Naxos catalog and its completist enterprises…”
Oh, classical music. That’s unfortunately a bit awkward, atm.
You might end up in Plex with a biography and album artist of the composer instead of the performing artist.
Or vice versa, always depending on how this album is listed on musicbrainz.org
There is no 100% satisfying solution to this, unless you want to curate all your embedded metadata yourself and re-organise your files so they follow exactly the
Music > Album Artist > Album Title > Tracks
hierarchy.
And this approach requires ‘Prefer Local Metatags’ to be activated. BUT: since this is global to the library, it will affect all artists and albums in there, not just classical.
Thanks. I can understand why the scanner would have trouble matching these albums. But isn’t that what Fix Match is supposed to be for? I entered the album info into MusicBrainz. I can see the correct album info listed in Plex when I try to Fix Match. It just doesn’t want to use it. If not for this use case, then what is Fix Match actually for? It used to work this way, now it doesn’t. I still think this is a bug. Are you trying to say that it’s not a bug and I shouldn’t expect to be able to use Fix Match to correct such problems?
I’ve added a lot of stuff to MusicBrainz. My experience is, it won’t match for at least 3 or 4 days, even though we’re told it should after about 24 hours. For sure it will match in about a week, after it has gone through the “approval” process at MusicBrainz…
You’ll likely have to match it manually, I don’t think Plex tries to match anything in music libraries after the initial scan.
I probably didn’t explain properly. After about 24 hours, your new addition to the MusicBrainz database will show up in Plex when you try to match. I’ve never had it actually match when you select it, even though it is obviously there.
Sometimes, after about 4 or 5 days, it will match when you select it. Sometimes not. The only sure-fire way, is to wait at least seven days, and then it will match.
And then, sometimes, it won’t match even then, but will match if you use “Fix Match” or “Refresh Metadata” on the artist the album is associated with.
It’s too bad that even when we users do our best to get a real match in Plex, and diligently add our music to the database, it’s still a trial and error method that ends up with the expected results.
I’ve said it before, the new Plex music system needs to have a few kinks worked out to make it functional.
Yeah, I’m a little frustrated too. I really think the new music system could be fantastic, but simple things like not being able to get a match for a match-able album make me crazy.
