Can't play h264/aac videos on Pixel 5

Server Version#: 1.21.0.3616 / Win 10
Player Version#: 8.9.2.21619 / Android 11

Just swapped my Pixel for a Pixel 5, and all the videos I was able to play on my Pixel no longer play on the Pixel 5. Music (mp3) plays fine.

Error is “An error occurred while attempting to play this video. Please check your connection and try again.”

It appears it’s trying to transcode for some reason. I’ve found various threads on the forums about this but haven’t found anything that seems relevant.

There isn’t an error in that snippet. Please provide the entire log. The log from the Android app will also help. Android, Android TV, Fire TV Logs | Plex Support

Sure. I didn’t realize the Android app had logs.

App logs: (File removed)
Server logs: (File removed)

I copied these over 5-10 minutes after attempting to play an episode of “Death in Paradise” on my phone.

If relevant, after seeing this problem with my new Android phone I was also trying to enable remote access for my Plex server. I’m port forwarding a manually configured port and Plex and a canyouseeme.org test verify the port is open but still haven’t been able to access Plex remotely. Mentioning in case it’s related or causing other issues. Enabling or disabling remote access doesn’t seem to make a difference from a player perspective.

It looked like you were on the local network to your server, right? Than remote access wouldn’t play a part. Although if you have a DNS rebinding issue, that would cause the issues you are seeing. However, PMS can detect that and I’m not seeing that issue in your logs.

I am seeing this error, which I’m not familiar with. I’ll have to check with the team.

11-28 07:53:57.893 i: [FFmpeg] [ERROR] [tls @ 0x745df28e90] Peer certificate failed verification

Figured it out, and can now play videos on my Android phone. I’m not sure which of these steps fixed the problem, but since I was trying to get remote access working and securing my system, I had done the following:

  • in “Settings - General” signed out and signed back in / claimed server
    – in Remote Access: disabled access and re-enabled
  • in "Network:
    – disabled IPv6 support
    – set “Secured Connections” to “Required”
    – set “Disable weak TLS versions”
    – unset “enable relay”
  • reboot Plex server
  • reboot all my Plex clients

Including for thoroughness’ sake in case anyone else runs into this problem in the future. I read in a different thread from sa2000 that signing out from Settings - General and signing back in generates a new certificate, so if you’re having this problem that’s the step I’d start with

Thanks for the help!
