I am installing Doctor Who S07 on my NAS. In-between episodes 5 and 6 there was a mid-season Christmas episode called “The Snowmen”. I have tried a number of different naming conventions. Right now I have it as S07E55 and it show up but at the end of all the other episodes. I have tried some other names but when I scan the library it will no show up in the list. ex. e05.5, e05-5, e5_5. Any help would be great, thanks
Those specials are actually… specials ![]()
“The Snowmen” in particular is s00e66. Plex won’t display those specials inline of their related season (e.g. as a mid-season or end-season special). However when playing the files, Plex will usually bring the special up as next episode when you finish the previous regular episode (here: after s07e05).
There’s a feature suggestion to display those specials inside the related season based on their air date.
Getting doctor who specials to show up in proper season order required me to number according to tvdb DVD order.
For reference, see Doctor Who (2005) - DVD Order - Season 7 - TheTVDB.com
- Have all the episodes named according to tvdb DVD ordering, then go into the doctor who page in Plex and press the pencil “edit” icon.
- Click the “Advanced” menu on the left.
- Scroll down to “episode ordering” and choose “TheTVDB (DVD)”
(Warning: Lot of basic info. I do not know how much you know about episode numbering, so I wanted to try to clarify things. If it feels like I am talking down to you, please forgive me, I do now know if this background is known.)
You must pick an episode ordering scheme used by TheTVDB or TheMovieDB. By default, libraries choose “TMDB (Aired Order)”. “Aired Order” typically puts all mid-season “special” episodes into a separate “Specials” season, called “S00” (Season zero).
If you number your episodes according to this number, Plex will show the episode in the “Specials” season rather than in-line with the rest. However, because Plex knows when this special came out, it SHOULD automatically select the christmas episode naturally as you progress through the show when it does the “play next episode” feature.
If this numbering isn’t acceptable, then there are alternate numbering systems available. “DVD ordering” is another way to do this. Sometimes DVD re-releases of a show will change the order of an episode or two. Sometimes this is better for the flow of a show. Sometimes the source people get a show from are DVD rips, and it is inconvenient to re-order the episodes back to aired order. So you can tell Plex that - for this one show only - to use “DVD Order” instead, and Plex will pull the metadata appropriately. Eminuss is saying that it looks like the “DVD Order” puts the mid-season specials in the middle of the numbering for the ACTUAL season, rather than a separate specials season. If you like that more, then re-number your episodes as the site has them, and tell Plex that this is the scheme you want to use.
I don’t like it, but thanks it did work. Maybe Plex can fix this.
Seeing as it’s suggestion that’s 9 years old, I guess we shouldn’t hold our breath waiting for it ![]()
