specials are not currently inserted into the episode timeline.
To elaborate, slightly, on what Trudge said... Currently, Plex does not distinguish "Specials" as part of the actual Season. So, according to the Plex [Media Naming and Organization Guide](http://wiki.plexapp.com/index.php/Media_Naming_and_Organization_Guide#Specials), you will need to organize and name is something like the following...

The first solution would require the Plex Devs to create a data field that would override the default season and episode metadata that is downloaded from an agent such as TVDB. So if we could edit the metadata after plex adds it to the database like we can for the rest of the info plex downloads from TVDB the problem is solved just not automatically.

The problem with relying on the "air date" is broadcasters sometimes air the the fist showing of a series out of order. Firefly is such an example. So I might want to have my shows in the order the creator intended and not the ways some dumb studio exec decided to show it.

Has any one come up with a solution to this yet? I'm having the same issue as described by the original poster. I'm also having an odd issue where an episode from Doctor Who (2005) is showing up in Doctor Who (1963) in my PMS even though the name of the file follows the standard file naming convention suggested.
This issue is incredibly frustrating. It’s even more frustrating to know it’s been all but ignored for 2 years.
I’ve wasted so much time trying to get Plex to recognize the episodes by name, but no, it insists on using the numbers - except the numbers are - at least in the case of Season 7, WRONG.
The Christmas special that year, for all intents and purposes is episode 6, as it is a crucial story point between the episode before it and the episode after it. But for whatever reason, those episodes are listed as 5 and 6 and not 5 and 7 as they should be.
Having the option to manually force this issue would be an incredibly useful tool, and would save a lot of us a lot of frustration. Sadly, TV shows can’t be formatted with a one-size-fits-all approach, so some flexibility would be appreciated.
Yes, in the grand scheme of things, the BBC is to blame for their scheduling nonsense, but again, if we had the ability to force this, it wouldn’t be an issue.

I just wanted to say, I have been working on this same issue for a while now, And I just found out that EMBY actually has a fix for the, EMBY lets you specify where in a season to air a specific special, I am now going to look into switching to EMBY, and see if it is a feasible replacement. It seems to me that there has been an ongoing issue with Plex not pulling the correct metadata for Doctor Who 2005 for some time. Not only does this effect the Christmas Specials but it also effects everything post Season 4.
I am following all of the correct naming protocols, I’ve tried removing the folder from my database source and then putting it back in - nothing.
Has there EVER been a successful fix for this? Is this something that is being looked into? Or am I going to manually rename everything?
I do note the suggestion that switching to EMBY might be a solution but I’ve noticed the quality of the local streams to my Apple TV is inferior to Plex.
I meant to post an update yesterday. I have worked out what I needed to do, it’s all about changing where Plex gets it metadata from and you have to un-check local media assets under the agents menu in the settings.
Handbrake saves metadata on the file that Plex then uses when organising your database.
Would have been nice for someone from the development team to have even acknowledged the issue but ah well.
