Roku TV’s and iPhones/iPads as Clients

So now to my problem… I fire up Plex and go to guide to start watching live TV and within minutes it acts as though it’s buffering but then playback stops. If you attempt to backup and start the channel again playback won’t start at all, it will say “Loading” and then finally say it can’t playback. If you then close the client app and start it back up you can then start streaming again for a couple minutes and then the cycle repeats. The same thing happens on the roku clients as well as apple clients. Interesting thing is DVR is not affected, My recordings are flawless.

Some help PLEASE! If I can’t resolve this I’m going to have to take it down and Plex is only appealing to me if I can use it for all aspects of my media.

Thanks!
Mark

I’d start by updating Plex Media Server, and seeing if you have the same issues on the latest version.

Updated to the release from today: Version 1.13.4.5271 and still having the same problem.

So I made a change last night the improved things pretty dramatically, but I’m having nearly the same problem.

I had a feeling it was either a bandwidth issue or a memory issue since it took about the same amount of time everytime for the channel to stop playing.

So I went to the PMS Data Storage Location menu in the server app and switched it from “Internal(system storage location)” to "Internal(user accessible storage location)"

I’m assuming this switches it from the 15GB of onboard storage of the Sheild to the 256GB USB 3,0 thumbdrive that I have installed in it.

This took me from being able to play a station for about 5 minutes to about 20 minutes. So a big improvement but I’m still having the same problem. One last interesting thing is I used to have to close the client app and restart it to start streaming TV again, now I can just select the station again without restarting and it will stream again for another 20minutes.

I mean I guess I could install a 2TB-4TB drive as internal storage for the Shield, but I’d prefer to keep using the NAS I have setup as it’s easier to upload my other media to and still serves the function of a NAS.

Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Mark

That still sounds like it’s using internal storage, a thumb drive would be external storage, I’d have thought.

Nope. The NVidia shield formats and integrates your USB storage device as "internal storage.’

Anybody else have any ideas? I didn’t realize that Plex didn’t offer any type of technical support when I bought a lifetime pass. Kind of frustrating that it basically doesn’t work.

Bump… I’d really love some help trying to solve this issue.

Do you have any other thoughts?

Unfortunately, not at the moment. I’ll see if I can replicate on my Shield later today though.

I’m tempted to go out and buy a WD EasyShare 8TB USB 3.0 Hard Drive to replace the 256GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive I’m using. Since I made the change to using the Flash Drive as Internal Storage my time I could view a channel went up a fair amount, so my only guess is that my problem is with lack of storage space, but it would seem to me that 256GB would be plenty to stream TV with. My only other thought is that the Shield is having trouble transcoding, because as I stated, my DVR recordings work perfect, but live streaming from my tuner only works for about 15-20mins now before it shows it can’t play.

don’t waste your money. I have the same setup and same issue, i connected a 1TB drive and same thing…playback would stop after 15-20mins. Its a transcoding issue with the shield. I have tried all storage locations and increasing the storage as well to no avail. BTW…i have a macbook pro with 256GB SSD, and when i hooked it up as PMS, it had no issue with live tv…played flawlessly for 5hrs and counting.

Thank you for the response! I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one, but it sucks that the issue exists. There must be people having it work correctly though. Have you tried any other TV Tuners? I’m trying to avoid building a PC to dedicate to Plex.

So I spent $150 on your software and can’t practically use it to watch TV. Seeing as this is the only customer support your company provides I would love a little help.

I’ve tried a few times to replicate this now, and get it running for several hours. I have a 500GB Shield, with a HDHR Connect. Could you provide some logs from PMS showing when it fails? If you can say what you were watching, and when, that would really help. Debug level logging only, please

Turned 2 TV’s both onto TV Tuner Channel 6.1Plex Media Server Logs_2018-08-21_07-45-32.zip (3.1 MB)

I probably sent too many logs in that zip?

Can you tell me the show name, and when you watched, please?

Today Show around 7:30am

@mlacouague, interested to know if there was a solution to this from plex ?
