I’m using a Shield TV as my Plex Server. I have 2 HDHomerun CONNECTs to pick up TV channels. I also use an external hard drive attached to the Shield TV to store TV shows and movies.
Most of the time when I watch Live TV through Plex the reception is bad, when I switch to the HDHomerun app there are zero issues. The same issue happens with the Plex DVR, but strangely enough it’s not as bad as when I try to watch live. This has been happening for a few years. Any suggestions on how to get this to work on Plex?
Internal Storage - SanDisk Extreme 128GB USB 3.0 flash stick SDCZ80-128G-G46 (87GB available space and “Internal shared storage” has 5.9GB available)
Media Storage - WD 4TB My Passport portable external Hard Drive USB 3.0 WDBYFT0040BBK-WESN (1.9TB available)
Ethernet connection to router
To sum up the issues:
HDHomerun App - works beautifully
TV recorded through Plex - usually a minute or so of Pixelation and sound issues, sometimes total junk
Plex Live TV & DVR - more often than not, pixelation and sound issues making it useless most times
Btw, I used to run my Plex server on a 2015 Shield TV Pro (with an SSD upgrade) and I had similar issues. On that system, I would record live TV to the internal 500GB SSD.
Plex continually reads and writes to storage so not sure how long that stick will last, plus it is on the small side for the space Plex needs for Temporary files for Live TV&DVR.
You should upload your debug logs after a failure to get to the root cause.
While watching a live tv session you can use a browser, enter https://app.plex.tv/web, go to the console and filter on signal to monitor the how good your signal is. 90% + is good.
