I don’t know if I’ve got something set up wrong, or maybe I misunderstand how it’s all supposed to work.
I’ve been using Plex as a DVR and to manage my ripped disks for some time now. I only ever watch on the TV/monitor connected to the machine running Plex Media Server. Basically it all works great. Recently I started to experiment with streaming out to other devices. I am currently only streaming within my home network. On old laptops, the wifi is far too slow and the video is full of pausing while it catches up. But when I tell it to transcode down to something smaller it just sits and churns. My understanding is that it should transcode on the fly and keep streaming. Is that right? When I try on my android phone or tablet using the Plex app, it seems to work, usually in just a few seconds.
I have experimented with both the web interface using chrome and firefox at plex.tv under Linux 20.04 and Windows 10 and the Windows app whatever version downloaded yesterday.
When I check the Plex dash, it does indicate that it is using HW transcoding, but nothing ever comes out the other end. I’ve let it run for probably a half an hour, maybe 45 minutes. Nothing. But to be clear, it does work on phone and tablet.
So I guess my questions are first, is it supposed to do what I’m expecting of it? If not, what’s my next step?
PMS is running on Ryzen 5, GTX1660, fast ISP, and hardwired to network. Other systems are a mixture of wifi and wired.
Thanks for any advice.
