Not really.
I can only guess from your post that you’re trying to stream “some media” using Firefox.
What media is that… some media from your Plex Media Server (or a friend’s server) or videos from Plex’ video on demand service or another online media source of Plex?
What version of Firefox are you using?
Is this about Plex not automatically picking the right subtitles or manually selected subtitles not being displayed?
Fixed post.
Latest public or latest beta? player version will depend on that if you are using the local web app. and app.plex.tv is almost always newer than both so you should generally just use that (it does not go out to internet and back)
what isn’t working? you can’t select them, they are not playing back after selecting, etc. Do they work in other apps? what show did you record, from what channel? got a server log?
I don’t like Plex so I would never use a beta version (LTS would be nice). The web page I use was a link from the Plex app after I installed the server the first time.
That is all you get for CC, not a fan of the giant play button on a paused screen ether, makes it difficult to read paused content from a show like a text on a phone. Phone text in TV shows is very common now…
Is this on while playing live or a recording? What tuner are you using?
You’re using the browser app on a phone? Is it not iOS or Android?
I re edited my first post…
The tuner is working properly.
My original post said the video file was made the day before I made this post. The file is at least a week old.
The tuner is not the issue and has been tested with multiple applications, stop trying to shwing the issue to hardware.
I changed the address from 127.0.0.1 to localhost (they point to same thing) so people trying to help that actually know what they are doing would realize I am using Firefox on the Plex server.
BigWheel I’m curious how you think you can access any network resource hosted on a PC from a phone using localhost.
Why I dislike Plex, no real support for paying customers, is a good start.
@tom80H and @BigWheel are trying to help you.
If your OP had less info than that you added within 5 edits, then you gave absolutely no information but are expecting help and then are saying this is why you dislike Plex, because there is no real support for paying customers?
I’m calling BS on that last part (at least in this case). You had 2 people that are affiliated with Plex try and help you out. Instead of trying to give useful information (like the logs which are generally a good idea to give when posting for support) or the actual information about the server version and client version you are using, you put very generic information.
You were asked questions by the two of them and it doesn’t look like you really answered many of their questions.
I honestly don’t give 2 s***s whether you end up liking or staying with Plex. But don’t go asking for help and then either giving the bare minimum information or being difficult when people that are trying to help you (again associated with Plex on top of that) are trying to ask questions to actually get somewhere to start troubleshooting your issue.

I edited my post 5 times because no one was, or is able to understand the relationship between localhost and server.
Answer how BigWheel’s questions apply to my problem.
How do you access a Windows Plex server from a phone using localhost? You can’t…
Also my issue is not accessing my Plex server, it’s getting it to show me captions in a browser on the same system, with a file created by it.
I take it this question was still based on your initial input which didn’t say anything about localhost. You had however written about how the “giant play button” is obscuring content on a phone – I take it BigWheel didn’t take that as “a phone with text displayed in the video” but “Plex playing your video on a phone”; hence the follow-up question to confirm in what environment you were playing that video.
From your subsequent edits/updates/posts I understand this is a DVR’ed video playing on Firefox through the version of Plex Web bundled with your server (localhost).
Can you please check out the item itself in your library? In the recording’s context menu (⋮
) you’ll find the option Get Info
. Click that and then click the View XML
button and post the content of the Media
tag here.
This will help to identify what type of subtitle that is.
Do you get the same corrupted subtitle when playing the file through a different player (e.g. VLC)?

Mod-Edit: added tags to show the XML
I’ve been putting off posting about this as well. It’s been happening here for multiple updates now. I’ll add some details later when I can.
I plan to fall back until it starts working again. But before I do that wanted to test it a bit. So I get the same results on my amazon firestick or in a windows browser on the PC running Plex.
I have a few old series recorded in 480p that have a width of 704 and a height of 480. None of these show captions on the firetv or windows browser.
A 480p show with resolution of 720x480 has captions but they are too large and ignore the size setting.
A 720p show with resolution of 1280x720 again has large subtitles. But if you start later in the show, not at the beginning, instead of subtitles you get a static line like “CWDhEBIGBANG018 MAIN TITLE O” which I have never seen before. This is obviously from the 18th episode of the Big Bang Theory recorded from CW.
All of this worked flawlessly until, I don’t know, 5-10 updates ago. I don’t recall. I’ll have to fall back until it starts working to be sure.
Before you roll back to a working version, so that the Plex team can help with this can you do the following to provide logs where the issue is reproduced so they can see if there is anything in the logs that might give a clue?
(Stolen from an @ChuckPa post):
Please verify DEBUG logging is on, VERBOSE is off
Play again for 20 seconds
Stop
Wait 20 seconds
Download the logs ZIP file (under Server - Troubleshooting)
Screenshot of making sure DEBUG logging is on and not VERBOSE (stolen from an @FordGuy61’s post):
Settings → Server_Name → General
Also, can you try what @tom80H asked in his last post post about checking the file in something like VLC and see if the subtitles work properly? Also, can you post the XML like he mentioned as well for that.
With the XML from the OP I am seeing that the subtitles are actually the closed captioning (eia_608), so it’s possible something got messed up where Plex isn’t properly processing those.
-Shark2k
It’s definitely closed captioning (eia_608) that I’m having an issue with, from local broadcast TV shows which I recorded on my plex server. Should’ve made that clear, my bad. The attached log files are from playing one of the 480p shows that no longer display any captions at all. Edited to include a screenshot showing the closed captions working in VLC

Hopefully this will give @tom80H some additional information that he can get to the right people to be able to look into this issue for you guys.
Otherwise, at least the fact that it is happening with eia_608 subs/closed captioning will mean that they can try and reproduce it on their end as well.
-Shark2k
Thanks for the suggestions of what to include to help diagnose the issue.
Bump. No love for this continuing issue?
I can work around this by extracting the captions to an srt file. That works fine. But that would be a lot of processing to do so for all recordings.
The EIA-608 captions contained in the .ts files mostly don’t work at all in Plex now, either on my Amazon Fire TV devices or in a browser.
There are a few files where the captions still work but not the size setting - they’re always large.
On most files, like the one I posted about advice, the captions do not work. The captions are in the files since they work in vlc and can be extracted to an srt file - but they just aren’t displayed any longer through plex.
