It would be very useful if the Plex Android and Roku apps had Chromecast receiving functionality, so when I run into something that is simply not available on a media player box I could go to my computer, start it playing in Chrome, and cast the tab to the media player. I tried the Cheapcast app on my Sony GTV box yesterday to watch the Superbowl but the app did not work.
If this already exists somewhere/somehow, inside or outside of Plex, let me know. As a cord-cutter, Plex+Roku and Plex+GTV provide a tremendous amount of content, but every now and then every player is blocked except a computer.
Not knocking your suggestion cause I would love it if every display device had the capability to be a DIAL destination (DIscover And Launch). That includes SmartTVs, HT Media Amps, HTPC frontends and Roku type devices.
But I'm not sure Plex App is the answer to this on the Android side since it would require the Plex App to be always running in order for it to work.
This would be better done via an Android app with a small operational footprint that runs as a Background service so it would always be available when connected to the Network. If done right it would even let you select with Player App to use by default.
The CCast SDK was released to the public today so expect to see a lot more CCast stuff coming soon.
And it would not surprise me to see some Dev create an app to turn an Android device into a DIAL Target.
Agreed, I'm just a fan of integrating more media "solutions" within one software framework: even when the player is something as simple as a Roku or as mostly simple as a GTV/Android box, looking at different apps/channels for different media is more complicated (for the family) that simply looking in Plex for everything, including the "Cast" channel.
