Catch-22 when watching a recording while it's broadcasting

I’ve noticed a real catch-22 when watching a program that is recording. Specifically, I record the PBS Newshour every evening at 6 PM. If I tune into the program after it’s started via Live TV & DVR, Plex correctly asks whether I want to watch it live or from the beginning. If I choose Watch It From the Beginning, it plays correctly until the time the recording is scheduled to end, at which point it stops and returns me to the Guide. The program is recorded without transcription, so I would expect it to immediately show up under TV Shows. It doesn’t, so there is now no way to watch the end of the program as the Guide is now onto the next show.

If I chose Watch It From the Beginning, shouldn’t it infer I’m using the DVR and play the program through to the end? That’s what I’d expect, but Plex doesn’t seem to behave that way.

How can I avoid this problem?

BTW, I’m running the latest released versions of all Plex software and servers and use the Apple TV app to access my Plex server.

Can you please provide the actual version numbers for the server and clients, and logs from both after reproducing the issue, please? I can’t reproduce this with an Nvidia Shield

Plex Web-General Version 4.22.2
Plex Media Server 1.18.8.2527-740d4c206
Plex Media Server Logs_2020-03-25_09-28-59.zip (3.7 MB)

It happened again last night. I hit Menu on my Apple TV 4k remote and could not get back to the program, nor was it listed under TV Shows. The night before Plex quit recording the program after the 20 minute padding and again, I couldn’t get back to the program because it wasn’t listed under TV Shows or Home.

BTW, the show I’m talking about is the PBS Newshour on channel 2.1 at 6:00 PM EDT, scheduled to record every weekday.

You’ve only provided the server logs there. Can we get both the server and client logs, please? So a fresh reproduction of the issue, and logs from the Apple TV and the server.

I’ve noticed this exact same behavior. It happens for me when I watch CBS Sunday Morning. The show starts at 9:30am eastern and goes until 11am and I’m always starting it from the start while it’s still in progress. I have commercial removal enabled and as expected there are still commercials while viewing it in progress (since that’s a post-processing function). But regardless it stops at 11am and the episode doesn’t show up on my library for a while (assume because of the post processing). I’m guessing it’s one of two issues: 1) when the air time expires perhaps post processing kicks in and stops any playback or 2) perhaps it’s just a bug that playback is disrupted when the normal air time completes. I assume the ideal behavior would be to allow someone to continue watching a timeshifted show through its completion and postpone and post processing and ensure playback isn’t interrupted.

I can try to capture logs next weekend during airtime if that would help…

What you’re describing is exactly what happens to me with the PBS Newshour. I feel pretty confident that the problem is happening on the Plex Server side and not with the Apple TV client.

I concur that the default behavior should be to continue the time shifting program until a user is finished watching. However, because there are no commercials on PBS, I have transcribing turned off for that program and the Newshour still doesn’t show up under TV Shows or Home immediately after the program ends, or abruptly stops playing when recording is finished.

The behaviour you want is what should be occurring. If you can reproduce this, and provide both the client AND server logs, and let us know the time the issue occurred, and the airing item, that would be much appreciated.

Dave, I’ll try and get everything to you, but the problem usually happens while we’re watching Newshour and doing something else, like making or eating dinner. It just makes it more difficult to abandon whatever I’m doing in order to capture and assemble the logs for you. I realize that will help you track this down, but the stars also have to align on this side as well.

At least Arinol’s posting shows that there is a problem with how Plex should behave and how it is actually behaving.

Having said all of that, I’ll try and replicate the problem and get you the logs.

Thanks, it’d be much appreciated! :plexheart:

Can you try on the latest beta server too?

Dave, I can already see you rolling your eyes, but your link only takes me to the announcement, which has no link to the download for the beta of Plex Server. Is there anyway you could include the link to the download in your response?

OK, found and installed it.

I’ve noticed this too. I watch the evening news, which records daily @ 6:30PM. If I attempt to tune in, and watch from start or even live, and pause or don’t finish it before the show’s end time, it will kick back to the channel / show.

I’ve also noticed this happens if I pause a show that isn’t recorded, and the show ends in real time, but I’ve still had it on pause. If I unpause, it will keep playing just fine, but any form of scrubbing stops playing and kicks back to the channel / show screen.

Also, side note, just found this out that even though I’ve properly setup “Allow Devices without Auth”, Live OTA TV will not tune into any channels.

Sorry, I was asleep then (timezones!), but glad you found it!

See my response here:

If you could provide the requested logs, it would be much appreciated

I would be more than happy to. My only problem at the moment is that construction workers cut my fiber line yesterday and I have no internet. I can’t record or tune into any OTA channels when plex has no internet. It just comes up with an error “Could not tune channel. Please check your tuner or antenna”. Can this be fixed in a future update?

I have verified the tuner works, because I can tune via vlc and DLNA just fine.

I can’t speak to how things will work or change with the offline experience in future (because I don’t know), but got my fingers crossed your internet is restored soon :crossed_fingers:

Internet was restored yesterday

Was watching the morning news that started at 7AM. Paused it before 8AM, and then attempted to “scrub” back to watch a segment. The timebar was stuck on the far right side, and did not allow any scrubbing.

Which part of the logs in particular do you need?

The entire log file, please
