Scenario - my CD collection is ripped and stored on my server in /artist/year-disc title/track #-song title.flac format. Mixed in under the artist folder are the occasional DVDs, sometimes they are bonus discs with the CD, sometimes purchased separately and ripped. However, once I imported my music folder, only the flac files were imported, the video was not.
What’s the best way to resolve this and hopefully get my music videos included with the music audio? Ultimately, I would like to browse to an artist and have both video and audio available to select from…
Plex doesn’t support DVD folder structures in general.
The videos from the DVDs must be in one or several normal video files (e.g. in mp4 or mkv format).
Correct, that I understand. I’m not using the DVD folder structure. What I’ve done is fully rip the objects and saved them as standard video files (mp4) then named them using my standard naming convention (track-title.mp4)
None of the folders that contain the ripped DVDs are included in my Plex library, so I am assuming that when I scanned for music, it only recognizes audio only formats (i.e. mp3, flac, ogg, etc…)
For example, a portion of my folder structure:
/music/Evanescence/2004-Anywhere But Home
/music/Evanescence/2004-Anywhere But Home-DVD
The CD flac files are contained in the first folder, then -DVD folder is not available as one that I can play…
Based on this, is there a way to replicate my library and combine the different formats into one single browsable structure?
Yes, there is a way. But you need to change your folder structure and the file names slightly.
Preparation:
Settings - Server - Agents - Albums - last.fm
+
Settings - Server - Agents - Artists - last.fm
activate the line ‘Local Media Assets’ if it is currently deactivated
Are the videos single songs (i.e. like a music video) or are they longer passages like a concert or an interview and such things?
Single song: (the video will be associated with a particular audio track)
/Music
/Evanescence
/2004 Anywhere But Home
1. Evanescence - track tile.flac
...
1. Evanescence - track tile - Description of video-video.mp4
Concert video or interview or documentation etc
/Music
/Evanescence
/2004 Anywhere But Home
1. Evanescence - track tile.flac
...
Description of video-concert.mp4
Follow the link I set above for the finer details.
There is also a ‘global music video folder’ possible.
This one can exist completely outside of the music folders. Although the videos in it cannot be associated with particular audio tracks. So they appear just below all albums.
After adding the videos, a Refresh of the whole artist is necessary.
The quick answer is that with DVD bonus discs are a lot of times, the music videos that go with the CD. Sometimes they’re live concert footage or interviews and other bonus video footage. Then there are the regular DVDs of artists that I also rip and include in the artist folders. So I think to encompass the entire gamut of variety, your second option would be better. A global music video folder is ok. Not being associated with the audio tracks is sufficient. But question, when you say they appear just below all albums, does that mean when I select the artist and see all albums for that artist, I will also see the DVDs as separate “albums”? And also how is this configured, both in the directory structure and added in the Plex server?

No, you will see the each of the videos appear below the albums.
Like so:

The instructions are in the support article I linked above.
