In light of the recent Plex outages, I think it may be time to look at the Plex authentication design. My family was super miffed at me yesterday when we went to watch some TV and none of our content was available from any device. I host my Plex server myself. My content is all on my local NAS drive. When the online Plex systems go down, there’s no reason at all that I should be locked out of my content.
If authentication is changed from a real-time check to a token based assignment, and the tokens get refreshed whenever the check is currently done, then Plex users could weather a reasonable period of down time (24 hours?) before down servers would cause us issues. I would hope that the Plex IT guys could resurrect their systems from nearly any major failure in under 24 hours.
