Changing Device Name

being able to carry the name over surely you just need to make it editable and link to a keyboard or update the code from the older version to work with the newer one as a temp measure

It would get great if they gave us the ability to rename devices. I also use Emby server and this is a normal feature !

Let me know when this is possible

Without this capability, there is NO way to tell Alexa which player to choose, So I have to run through the house to all 6 Fire Sticks to find which one is playing. The only way to change to a different player is to turn all the other devices off and remove them from devices on server,. Really makes Alexa totally useless for those of us using AFTV Sticks. Hard to believe this has been an issue for just short of a year and still not resolved.

What a same, could have been something really cool !

Chiming in here to say that I would love for this feature to come back. Currently have a Fire TV and two Fire TV Sticks and it’s definitely frustrating not being able to rename. Especially when inevitably picking up a newer 4K Fire Tv in the future then there will be 2 fire tvs and 2 sticks.

Could we get some comments from the developers on why they cannot put this feature back or when they plan to work on it? I used to be able to name my devices, but now with 6 of them in my house, it’s impossible to tell which is which. So you have spent the time to integrate an Alexa skill, but gave us no way to tell Alexa which device to control because we still cannot name them?

Please development team, focus on a usability issue such as this one before working on the latest cool new feature, it would help to keep your base of loyal customers and fans happy (me being both of those)!

Weird how my Nvidia Shield managed to change its name … Why would it work on it and not the other devices? My Amazon Fire TV now shows as ‘Fire TV’ after a clean install. My Roku has kept its ‘old’ name (unless I wipe and reinstall the app) come on Plex devs sort it oot min!!

Anyone know anything about this? It’s definitely unusable with Alexa in the current state if you have more than fire tv.

It would be super helpful if someone from the Plex team could update if this is a feature being worked on or if it’s something on the back burner.

It’s definitely something we’re interested in and working to support. Unfortunately, it’s also something that’s not nearly as straightforward as one might assume.

I’ll echo what others have said here. It’s hard to comprehend this being a legitimate answer. Seeing as how the app did at one point allow you to change the name of the device, it’s possible. Also, seeing as how the device can retain a previous name, a portion of that feature still exists. Previously it was just a nuisance. Now, Alexa is completely useless (with multiple devices). The other day, I asked it to play a movie, and it never started. An hour later I turned on the other TV (also a Fire TV) and it was playing the movie.

So not being able to rename the Fire TV device still seems to be a problem and still kinda sucks. Hope this gets added at some point.

Can we get any kind of update? this is kind of crazy that you can’t simply rename your plex device this topic was opened over a year ago. What is the current status of this feature?

In case nobody noticed, the latest version of Plex for Fire TV (6.4.3.1944) allows you to set a device name under Settings/General. Despite the lack of a popup keyboard, the name is editable. Use the Amazon Fire TV app as the remote, manually activate the keyboard, backspace over the current name and set a new one.

HOWEVER, the updated name does not show up in the cast options on the iOS app, the device list on the web interface. It DOES show up as a cast option in the Windows App and web interface. Woo-hoo!

I’m happy to see that this is under development and hopefully it will be implemented soon. Thanks!

Update: the updated name is showing up for SOME players on the iOS app and the Devices list on the web interface. Also working with Alexa.

I have a work around for this issue. All of these steps may not be necessary.

On the Fire TV go to Settings -> Applications-> Managed Installed Applications -> Select Plex -> Clear Data -> Uninstall

Remove Fire TV device from the devices list in the plex settings using the online interface at plex.tv
https://app.plex.tv/desktop#!/settings/devices

Go to the app store on the Amazon Fire TV and reinstall Plex (DO NOT SIGN IN)

Skip all the sign in and continue without signing in.
Once you are in the Plex interface go to the settings and change the name of the device.

Now Sign in

The device will name will now reflect the change in the devices section at plex.tv

I hope this helps

Workaround confirmed, works also for me.

Is it really THAT hard to check the setting of the name during login of a device and enter it in the name registry???
