I have a large music library that I recently migrated to Plex. This library has been cobbled together from all kinds of different sources over the years, with lots of different file formats (mostly MP3, M4A, and AIFF), generally spanning the 128-320kbps range.
Now that I have a lot more space to work with, I’d like to start going through my old CDs and ripping some favorite albums in CD-quality FLAC. The only thing is, I don’t want Plex to consider these FLAC files to be “new” compared to the existing files. I want the songs to still have the same playcounts and ratings, and to be in the same playlists and collections as they were before I swapped in the FLAC files. I want it to be “the same song” as it’s always been, just with a higher-quality file behind it.
Since I can’t directly edit a song’s file path, I don’t see how I can do this. If I were just upgrading the bitrate but not changing the file format, I assume I could just swap the files in. But since the extension is changing, I’m at a loss. Any help?
