Changing music hd location to new hd

Why is it when I change the location of my music files to a new hard drive plex scans and forgets all the custom stuff I’ve added over the years in the info panes or Metadata panes even though there locked. Do I really have to go through my music again and add all the custom stuff or just wait for it to complete the scan.

Don’t do that, because
it is much harder to get a “match” on music, where every song is assigned the identical guid that it had before if the album is added to a new library or is removed and added again.

Here’s my recommendation:

If you have to replace a hard drive,

  1. shut down Plex
  2. add the new hard drive
  3. copy the data from the old to the new drive, preserving all folder and file names as they were
  4. swap the drive letters of old and new drive How to assign permanent letters to drives on Windows 10 | Windows Central
  5. remove the old drive
  6. start Plex. It will behave as if nothing has changed.

If you just want to extend the available storage space and keep the old hard drive, just

  1. add the new hard drive
  2. create a folder which holds the second part of your music collection – e.g. P:\Music 2
  3. edit the music library in Plex and add the folder P:\Music 2 to the music library. i.e. keep the existing folder on the old hard drive in there!
If you acquire new music, just add it into the new folder on drive P: then scan the music library. It is perfectly fine to have the media files of one Plex library distributed across several hard drives.
  4. Don’t move any of the files from the old to the new drive.

P.S.: you can revert the fallout of your file moving from above, if you restore an older backup of your server database.
