Splitting Music Files Between Two Drives

My music file collection has become so large I’ve decided to split it between two external hard drives. Currently my plex files are in a folder named, “Library” which has about 10 genres in it.

Is there any way to remap the server so that I can keep five of the folders in the original drive and move the other 5 sub-folders onto the second drive inside a folder I’ll call “Library2”

Thanks

Turn off the settings for automatically emptying the trash on library scan (because the operations are in the wrong order, and it empties the trash before matching the new content).

Create the “Library2” directory and edit your current Music library to include it. Plex will scan things and find nothing has changed (because the files haven’t moved yet).

Now move the files over from the old drive to the new directory, and once that operation is done, run a manual library scan.

Make sure everything matched as it did before (there should be no new content discovered by the Plex server from the scan). if there are files it claims are new, Fix Match on them to match them to the albums they were listed as originally when the files were in the old location.

Once you have checked that all “new” files have been safely associated back to what they are, you can do a manual empty trash on the library. This will remove the missing file listings from the music files when they were on the old drive, but the contents of the library and the added-on date should not change since the “new” files on the new drive are taking their place.

You can turn back on the automatic trash emptying if you want now.

Will this work even if I’m only moving half of the old files to the new drive?

Plex can’t recognize the files are the same. It will just see it as you suddenly having a bunch of duplicate files and the original files are missing “Not Available”. Since this is a new directory you are adding to your library, make sure you get the permissions right for the files after they are moved over for Plex to see them.

I’ve never tried this with music files, but I shuffle video files between two drives that are both mapped to the same library this way. You can always make a backup/snapshot of things beforehand and if it doesn’t work out, just move the files back where they were and restore the earlier database state.
