Changing TV Show File Names

Hi Guys,
I have run the majority of my files through the Filebot utility and I just noticed that for two of my Anime series FullMetal Alchemist and FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood it has named the files as though the series is one long season of 50+ episodes. All of the online databases have them listed this way. This is incorrect. Both of these series have multiple separate seasons. This is shown very clearly in the show by changing opening and ending credits. My question is, if I correct this and change the file names to reflect multiple seasons will Plex recognize them or will it trip out?

Look how this show is organized on the metadata services which Plex is using: TheMovieDB.org and TheTVDB.com

If there are differences between those two, you can tell Plex, which organization to use. In the properties of the show, on the Advanced tab, “episode ordering”.

All of the online databases show these series as one long single season. I would prefer them to be listed in the multiple season fashion that I have them arranged in on my hard drive as this is in fact the correct listing. I plan on creating a separate library for my Anime. What settings do I need to change in order to do this.

Plex only pulls the info from these sites in the way it’s listed. Any discrepancies between your files and what they have will cause incorrect matches

If you see something that’s actually incorrect those changes have to be done by submitting a request at the TVDB or TMDB. Unfortunately, what is correct or incorrect is subjective

I’m seeing two different shows listed on both TVDB and TMDB. I’m not familiar with this show so I don’t know exactly what’s wrong from your perspective

Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009)

Fullmetal Alchemist (2003)

Yes there are two different versions of this Anime series. Both are listed as one single season consisting of 50+ episodes and Filebot has named the files as such. The online databases are wrong. Both series are multi season series. One is four seasons long and the other is five seasons long.

Both anime-focused databases (like AniDB and MyAnimeList) and non-anime databases (like TVDB and TMDB) have organized these shows in essentially the same way, so there appears to be consensus that they should be grouped as single 51 episode (FMA03) and 64 episode (FMA09) shows rather than the way you are describing.

Anime series (and Japanese TV in general) don’t really map 1:1 to a “standard” TV series in terms of how they are structured, especially with the concept of seasons. The case you describe with different OP/ED within a series is not even consistent across different series, so if you fixate on the season aspect it is going to be impossible to find a standard way to fit it into what Plex expects (which is basically just what TVDB and TMDB expect).

Personally I use a separate Anime library that uses ASS/HAMA as the scanner/agent and I group related shows into Collections that represents the overall “series”. I find this works well enough for me.

I was kind of thinking the same thing. I have noticed that most Anime in their native Japanese form tend not to be grouped into seasons. Maybe it’s the English dubs are grouped this way. I’ve had these two series grouped by seasons for a long time, since WAY before I stared messing with Plex. That’s why I am fixated on it. I plan on putting my Anime into it’s own TV Based Library and the movies into their own Movie based library. Some of my others were already in the single season format so I may just go with it. I’m still trying to figure out how to quickly fix the file names with Filebot though as I would like to at least see if Plex can figure it out. I’m not a fan of Plex’s overly simplistic file system as I have already invested a lot of time and effort organizing my files in a more structured file system. It tells me that Plex’s underlying database is probably in first normal form.

From my experience with Anime, it is pretty common that the OP and ED is changed within a season. More often than not, an anime switches the songs after about ~12 episodes.
These are not indicators for a season break.

To me they are. Along with those changes I have also noticed that the direction of the story also tends to change and that indicates a season break. It’s neither here or there. I was able to reorganize my files back to their original layout and they added just fine. Four seasons of FMA. Next I fix FMAB
