Channel Hyperlink Integration

I want to create a Channel where I can post pathways to content I do not own to use plex as a content video player. To achieve this, I want to Hyperlink videos (found on the web) within the Channel (include similar organizational parent/sub capabilities). Perhaps Plex will allow the webpage to launch and play within Plex. This should NOT require any API, merely use of the internal video player for web content.

Use Case: I have online content I am using to learn the guitar so I would like to have a Channel I named Guitar. Rather than pointing the UI to my personal content I want to simply hyperlink the videos and provide my own personal naming and organizational context. Doing so will allow me to manage the content(s) order. The structure could be similar to Movies or TV Shows. Utilizing TV Show will allow the option to label the Channel “Education” then Season 1 could be “Guitar” and Season 2 could be “Cooking” (examples). Alternatively, Smart Playlists could be utilized.

Providing such a solution will require the user to input all information manually and manage it’s organization. No API will be required, however, use of the internal UI videoplayer would be beneficial as opposed to launching a new webpage every time, especially if I capture the specific video link.

I searched and did not see anyone posting this specific request. Instead, people have asked for YouTube integration, but no API is supported. I am asking for Hyperlinks to bypass this issue and to allow more options than YouTube links to be collected.

There’s been another suggestion asking for an option to point Plex to a URL / link using so called STRM files (basically a text file containing said URL). You might want to comment/vote in that thread in order to help us avoid distracting or cannibalizing votes for the similar use case.

That being said… I suppose the kind of integration you have in mind can be quite challenging for Plex on a number of levels, e.g. when it comes to integrating foreign, possibly copyrighted, content bypassing that party. There’s use cases where that’s perfectly legit for you as a private person… but it’ll be on an entirely different page if Plex as a company gets involved (e.g. licensing or legal liabilities).
