Chromebook to Chromecast Help - Media Servers

I just recently received a Chromebook and a Chromecast as gifts. I'm wanting to stream personal video files from my Chromebook to my Chromecast, which brought me to downloading Plex. Once downloaded, I signed up and it told me I needed to download a Media Server. After going to downloads, I see no download for the Chrome operating system. I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction for streaming personal video files from my Chromebook to my Chromecast. My Chromebook is made by Samsung with Chrome operating system, model number XE303C12.

I don't believe there is a way to cast personal media files from a chromebook to a chromecast.  Plex can't do it because there is no compatible Plex server software for the chromebook.  It's possible you could use real player cloud, but I've never used it, and not sure how much it costs.

You dont need to install the server on the same machine as you want to play content.

Do you have another machine (mac, windows, etc) you can install the server on?

Once you have a server up and running, and content added to it, you can do what you wish to do.

Alternatively, if you can find a web app (chrome extension) that will play your media files in the chrome browser, you can cast them without the need for plex.

If you dont mind trying beta software, Chrome browser can also cast your entire screen, though it is listed as 'experimental' but does currently work.

I have tried downloading Realplayer Cloud, but my Chromebook says the file type isn't compatible. That was actually my first choice.

I do have another laptop with Ubuntu for the OS. I didn't check to see if there is a download for that so that will be my next option.

I have also thought about the Google Cast. Only problem is, getting personal files to play in a browser, which I haven't figured out how to do yet. Thanks for the replies.

They do have a download for Ubuntu so I will turn my other laptop into a server. Thanks for the tips. Hopefully I can get this working.

I dont have a chromebook so I cant try, but its possible on a computer to simply drag a file to the URL bar in chrome and have it play your media (not sure if a chromebook functions the same in regard to files). Of course this assumes that your machine can play that media natively. If it cant, perhaps you can find an extension for chrome that will work.

The description for the Plex app in the Chrome store says chromebook users should use the Chrome browser rather than the Plex app itself when wishing to cast to a Chromecast.

Navigate to https://plex.tv and then log-in and launch. From the browser page we should be able to cast to a Chromecast device
