Chromecast AAC 7.1 stopped working (AAC 5.1 works)

I recently purchased a Phillips Ambilight 4k Andriod TV model number is 65PUS8204/12

Spoted in comments above another comment similar above as these have chomecast ultra and android tv built in.

Tested on this tv before and found using the plex app anything with aac7.1 wasn’t giving any sound. (I dont tend to actually use a reciever just the tvs build in stereo speakers)
5.1 is fine and I think maybe dolby true hd 7.1 is also fine in app.

Anyway if i use the plex app off phone and chromecast gives me two options for this tv. the one labled 4k UHD LED andriod tv with Ambilight 3-sided and google… FAILS to play 7.1 aac sound. (The picture also seems to speed up Plex web app says sound is being transcoded?)

But with the same film if i pick the model number chromecast plays 7.1 aac sound without issue. Checking on the Plex webapp showing it is trancoding the sound down.

Oddly finding it seems to be working okay again now. Will leave the post as maybe a clue towards the issue.

why can’t plex make an CC ultra profile?

Chromecast is the red headed step child for Plex. Just 1 more issue that they don’t care to even acknowledge. I get h4 errors for any 7.1 content, EAAC included which is expressly supported according to Plex.

Sorry to hijack this but volume control is not even working for Chromecast Ultra plugged in a normal (not surround) TV.

I hope they fix chromecast audio soon. People inclusing me and other posters here got tired of reporting it for years… its just ignored here.

They are more focused on DVR functions more then anything else it seems. No love for Chromecast. Just like they dropped Plex on the Windows Store. Pretty much upgrade or get dropped.

I’ve “fixed” my problem by purchasing the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro.
I haven’t had any issues with that. This is not a cheap “fix” though.

Bump…

Google claims to have never officially supported multi-channel AAC in the Chromecast, and they removed it from the software.

Are then any updates on when this issue might get fixed? It seems odd to me that this is still an issue given chromecast is such a popular streaming device.

In the comment right above yours it seems as Google will not fix it, as they intentionally removed it.

I think there are multiple issues. Google has said they’re not supporting multi-channel AAC; Plex can’t change that.

So I believe the expected behavior is that Plex will transcode multi-channel AAC into AC3.

I have no idea if EAC3 7.1 is expected to work, or if the Chromecast only officially supports something funky like “EAC3 5.1”. I would hope that passthrough would mean passthrough but …

Obviously the errors aren’t expected in any case. I have no idea what an h4 is or if it’s coming from the Chromecast or inside Plex during the transcoding setup.

I’ve seen a few requests from Plex folks to provide sample files. Has anybody done so?

Yes agree. I provided a sample file a couple of months ago.

The below was posted by a Google Employee regarding chromecast not supporting surround sound AAC.

Hey there folks,

In case you missed it, we have an updated response regarding surround sound and Chromecast devices. Please see the response below:

Chromecast does not decode surround sound signals. It passes 5.1 surround sound signals from an app that supports surround sound to the AVR or TV it’s plugged into. The app and AVR or TV must communicate with one another over EDID to indicate that the app supports 5.1 surround sound.

Please note that supported sites like YouTube and Netflix will perform best using direct playback vs. casting the tab; however:

  • Tab projection is limited to 720p and stereo sound
  • Direct playback supports 1080p and 5.1 audio
  • Netflix will emit 5.1 surround sound if Chromecast is connected to an AVR that supports DD+
    "

Have the samples submitted helped Plex fix this issue?
Looks like the Google Employee is saying the Chromecast Ultra simply passes the signal from the Plex App straight to our AVRs/TVs.

I don’t know if they (Plex) have attempted to fix it but can definitely say it hasn’t been fixed. I did provide a sample a few months ago but haven’t heard anything since then. I don’t know what the solution is, but if surround audio just doesn’t work I don’t understand why the audio can’t just be transcoded to another format.

Sorry folks we still have nothing new to share here.

AFAIK, nothing as changed in the Google SDK that would help, either identify the devices or the specific device capabilities.

That said I’ve re-pinged the devs on the internal issue, in case they are aware of something I’m not by looking into the docs, or if perhaps there are other ways to work around this.

If there are any updates on this I will definitely post in here.

Nice of you to join us!

Your link has some extra accounts.google.com... garbage in it. I think the forum software tries to follow the link to generate a preview, and any redirects …

@Volts thanks for fixing the link.

@olly230 not sure what you meant to add by posting this… it doens’t seem to include any info on improvemnts to the SDK, much lest audio channels limitations/support… maybe you meant to post something else?

it was me raising 2 years ago that a firmware update to the chromecast has stopped plex working properly in particular audio. Chromecast is a closed box and Plex were unresponsive.

I’ve leant a lot since then.
And bought a Shield…

I was a sharing an open ticket.

Probably best to open a new thread for those then. This post is specific to AAC 7.1 playback.
