Something happened: Chromecast stopped working with AAC 7.1 videos. AAC 5.1 works. AC3 5.1 or 7.1 works. But AAC 7.1 fail with “Error: h4 (not supported)” error on Chromecast.
This just started happening within the last few weeks - Plex App update? We watched two AAC 7.1 movies just last month without issues. Now they won’t play anymore with said error.
How did it just stop working? Why does 5.1 work?
Chromecast passes through to the Denon AVR-1910 receiver.
This is happening for me as well. Specifically AAC 7.1 causes an h4-error when casting. For some media I have alternate audio tracks that work so it is the audio stream that causes the problem. It doesn’t matter if I cast from the android app or from the WebUI on my server (Ubuntu).
Only having issues on this with Chromecast Ultra (h4-error). Am sending from an Andriod phone. My old original Chromecast has no issues (tested with exact same movies). My audio profile FLAC 7.1 is the one which fails. FLAC 5.1 or AAC 5.1 or any other combo (2.0 for ex.) other than 7.1 works fine. All of the videos are encoded h.264 and are mkv. I can play the same movies on computer, phone, old chromecast, whatever. So mine is specific to Chromecast Ultra. Started after an update of plex server around 2019-07-10. Current Version of Plex installed: 1.16.3.1402. I have hard reset Chromecast Ultra, but still same problem. I believe the issue is Plex related. As this issue pops up time to time, wondering if old bug in another build tree is coming back, or if Chromecast just keeps making weird changes. Again, original Chromecast works fine still.
Old Chromecast device firmware: 1.36.159268
Chromecast Ultra: 1.40.156414
@guice666, running my Chromecast Ultra through a Denon receiver as well. However, my Samsung BluRay which is also plugged into the Denon works just fine with all FLAC 7.0 audio from the Plex App loaded from the Samsung App store on the device. So it’s not the receiver. So this issue is localized with the Chromcast Ultra streaming.
Same issue for me this past month with the Chromecast ultra. AAC 7.1, DTS 7.1, and truehd 7.1 used to play just fine (transcoded to ac3 7.1 typically) but now only the DTS tracks work and they’re transcoded to ac3 5.1, everything else gives the h4 error. What gives, Plex?
Unfortunately, still getting transcoder errors on Chromecast Ultra after today’s PMS update (1.16.4.1469) and Plex Web (4.01). Chromecast (gen)2 still plays content fine.
Just updated to the newest PMS and the issue remains. No Dolby truehd 7.1 files will play on either Chromecast ultra or Chromecast gen 2. Same h4 error every time with every file.
True HD isn’t working.
What do I need to change to at least get plex to transcode the audio. That will make the files play right?
My files are at a higher bitrate than my wifi can deliver and the TVs ethernet is rubbish so the CCU is the only device i have to get full fat 4k files playing.
It seems that I can play truehd files transcoded down to stereo AAC on my 3rd generation Chromecast again but I still get the h4 error on the Chromecast ultra. Both have the same firmware.
