Hello,
So I have a weird situation that I cannot quite figure out. I have my Plex Server installed on an Ubuntu 16.04 Headless server. I have the most recent Plex Pass Update installed. My server is connected to my home internet at 500Mbps speeds. Everything seems to work great 99.9% of the time.
Here’s my question/issue. I’ve had this issue for several months and through several Plex Server upgrades.
Our main TV in the house is a Vizio P65-C1which has Chromecast built in to the TV. The TV is connected to my home network via ethernet. The TV came with its own (android) tablet as a remote. I have Plex for Android installed on the tablet. I also have a Samsung Galaxy S8+ with Plex for Android installed on my phone. And finally I have an HP laptop at home that’s connected via wifi.
So…If I access my Plex server on my laptop (using Chrome) and cast a movie to my TV, there is no video transcoding whatsoever. (Almost) All movies are played via Direct Play.
But, if I cast a movie to my TV using either my Galaxy S8+ or my Vizio (android) tablet, it transcodes video. I verified this on a specific movie last night. Android devices that cast to the TV resulted in transcoding the video. My HP Laptop that cast to the TV resulted in direct play…on the same movie!
I swear that I have adjusted about every setting within the Android app on both devices and cannot get a movie to play without transcoding the video. Both Android devices seem to want to “upscale” the video to the max instead of playing the movie at original quality (which is 1080p).
There doesn’t seem to be any quality differences at all. It just seems weird that the only way I can get a movie to direct play is by using my laptop to initiate the Cast to TV.
Does anyone know how I can get my android devices to direct play movies (like my laptop) when casting movies to my Chromecast TV?
Thanks,
Mike
