Chromecast Ultra and 2nd Gen - Error code: h4 (Not Supported)

Thanks, but it was already checked. Tried turning it off anyway and no change.

I have the same issue.
Shouldn’t we be getting a response from the Plex team ?
I’ve been scrolling throuh this topic and it seems its about 3 years of complaints but no real answer?

Absolutely.

There is no response or answer from Plex, and it is impossible that this issue has not been seen.

I’ve also raised this in tickets, tweets and other methods I can find to draw attention of Plex.
I’ve even had my comments pointing to this issue deleted in other places on the internet.

I do this not because of hate, but because I really like Plex, I’m a lifetime Plex Pass holder, I have encouraged many other people to use it, I’m a huge fan, and want to use it… But I cannot.

So ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

I don’t have this issue, but I also do not have any MKV files on PMS, movies are MPEG-4 files with the extension .m4v, recorded television is from a HDHomeRun Extend so they are MPEG-TS files with the extension .ts.

Is the MKV file the problem?

Well, I think if we are paying for it, we should at least get an answer.
I’m still on monthly basis. So I’m still looking around. Is Emby a good alternative ?

Well I’m not feeling entitled to an answer or anything like that, honestly, I’m just disappointed that its been radio silence on this issue and for this long.

At this point, the vast majority of my media has become unplayable on my Chromecasts and my sick mother cannot stream her Columbo box set from my server to her Roku in her house… I’m just disappointed.

I’m investigating nuking the whole thing in another thread, but there is no response on that thread.

Emby works as expected, but I’m not trying to make this an Emby thread.
I just want to fix this issue.

I know it’s not a proper fix, but have you tried starting streaming on your device, then casting? That seems to get around this issue. It’s not ideal, but at least you can watch content that way. But otherwise, yes, this is getting rather annoying because now I have to start everything on my phone/tablet before I can cast, and it’s just not as smooth as connecting then casting (which does still work some of the time, making this all the more frustrating).

I know that works for some and not others – I’m one of the ā€œothersā€. I have a feeling we’re discussing a couple of closely related issues in this thread. In my case, it is the difference between 5.1 and 2.0 audio and pretty much nothing else, though mixing down the recording may cause other unintended but beneficial changes.

In any event, it would be good to hear from Plex that they’re either (1) looking into it, (2) going to look into it, or (3) giving up on those generations of Chromecast and never going to look into it.

Then we’d know were we stand and could plan accordingly. I, for one, would be happy to give them my money for a lifetime pass if I knew the problem would be fixed. I had already given them my money and had to ask for it back when I discovered this issue.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this impacts all Chromecast devices, at least through Ultra (not sure if anyone has tested with the new Android TV with remote).

Yeah… that’s sorta where I was going with that… Give up the Chromecasts that aren’t Chromecast with Android TV.

I am also, unfortunately, one of the ā€œothersā€ where it doesn’t work for me to start the stream then redirect it to the Chromecast.

My understanding is that the problem is with all Chromecasts, as it is a profiling issue that I could previously fix by manually setting the profiles and codecs. Details of that manual hack are still all over this forum in old threads.
I remember that at some point they patched this functionality out and the manual config file changes no longer worked.

From that point, the issue I started this thread about started becoming more and more common even with existing media that could be played previously without issue.

The fact that Emby works FLAWLESSLY in with the exact same Chromecasts and media is all the more disappointing.

For reference, I have:

  • 1x 1st Gen Chromecast
  • 1x 2nd Gen Chromecast
  • 2x Chromecast Audio
  • 1x Chromecast Ultra (4K-capable)

Sure, I could just replace all my Chromecasts with third-party Android TV boxes or Chromecasts with Android TV…

…but I’d rather not.

I’d like to think a lot of people don’t want to do that, or have to use a remote when casting.
I rather enjoy using my phone to cast my media to Chromecast, including from the Plex Android app.

So I’ve been reviewing this thread again and I’d really like to get something from Plex if possible:

I’d recommend anyone also dealing with issues in this thread take a look at the link above.

@duncanbeevers or @duncanbeeversAdmin can we please get something? Anything?

I would like to help here, as I have all generations and versions of Chromecasts using my PMS, without any issues. I also have a Chromecast with Google TV. Again, no issues.

What is different about my setup from what people in this thread are doing?

I think at this point, since plex aren’t paying a blind bit of notice to any of this, we have to maybe start giving the app 1 star and leaving rubbish feedback. That would get their attention, if enough do it. I think it helped with another app I use get a silly bug fixed.

I’d be happy to share a problematic recording with you, but first I’d have to find one that wouldn’t be a violation of copyright, DMCA, etc.

I’m still holding onto a sliver of hope that someone at Plex will pick this up and fix this, so I’m just wanting to focus on finding the root of the issue. I want someone at Plex to come work with us on this, and I’d rather draw attention than get into giving 1-stars and such.

Anyway, @jebrossard and @earlmagnus I’d be happy to collaborate and see if we can find what the differences are.

Some questions to get us started:
Are you running on bare metal/VM/Docker?
What OS are you using?
Are you playing a variation of media in different containers and codecs?

I’m running Plex in a Docker container, based on linuxserver.
The docker container is running on Ubuntu 18.04.5 LTS.
Its all running in Unraid 6.3.0 stable.

Well @plonka2000, as I’ve described above, I’m transferring recordings from a TiVo to a Raspberry Pi 4 and running ffmpeg there to predigest the recordings. I’m pretty sure I already provided the command line, but can provide it again, if required. The Plex server is running on that Pi.

If I specify 2 audio channels in the conversion, the recording works casting to Chromecast. If I let it pass through 6 audio channels (5.1), or specify 6 audio channels, the recording doesn’t work casting to Chromecast, but will work in other contexts – streaming to my phone, for example.

@BigWheel: you seem to be the only one that ever responds to these kinds of things. Any comment on this long standing issue?

I see this issue on my setup that has been going on for probably close to a year.

Running on Synology 1515+ and 1520+
Chromecast Gen 2
This happens on MKV files with TrueHD 7.1 files. I don’t have the issue with DTS or 5.1 channels.

The only workaround that works for me is by optimizing the file so that it no longer is TrueHD 7.1
