Yes, Plex will recognize that the file is TrueHD 7.1, but the device you are playing from (i.e. the Chromecast Ultra) must support that for it to work. The Chromecast Ultra does not support that. If your TrueHD 7.1 has the EAC5.1 base track, the app will play the base track but you will lost the other 2 channels. If it does not have the base track, your Plex Server will transcode the 7.1 to something the device supports, likely 5.1 aac.
So you are saying your TV app can direct play TrueHD to your AVR?
That won’t work. You can’t pass TrueHD out from a TV.
Unfortunately my AVR doesnt tell me much. Its a Samsung Q90R 7.1.2. They only time the display shows anything is when it receives a file with Atmos metadata.
And to make things even more confusing…
The AVR doesnt recognise this file as Atmos when played through Plex. But it does play the 5.1.2 channels correctly. (When playing the noise from above, only the upward firing front and rear speakers fire).
I would need more info, but most likely the TV didn’t report a supported codec back to the Chromecast Ultra or reported the wrong codec so when it tried playing the file, it just fails.
I then upgraded my TV to a LG C1 and used the LG plex app (not chromecast) and the same file plays.
But what is being sent to the receiver? A TV should not be able to send TrueHD 7.1 atmos to a receiver via the arc connection. If the reciever doesn’t tell you but you do hear 7.1.2, it’s likely the receiver is doing some sort of internal conversion from what it is receiving. Some devices do have these special Dolby chips that can do that. Have you tried playing a regular 5.1 or 7.1 audio track and seeing that the receiver does then?
