Chromecast w/ Google TV - Plex content on the "For You" Tab

Now that Chromecast w/ Google TV is out, it looks like they reworked the home screen (compared to other android tv, like shield) and how content is suggested.

There is now a “For You” Tab which contains suggestions based on the services your subscribe to.

would it be possible to have plex content show up in this “For You” tab?

More information on the “For You” tab could be found here - https://thestreamable.com/news/what-is-google-tv-the-brand-new-interface-coming-to-chromecast-android-tv

That looks like he same thing as the current “channels” on Android TV just renamed.

In theory it serves the same purpose, but fundamentally it might be different as plex content does not show up here and is not an option for me to enable to show up under this tab.

Well as far as i am aware no one here even has one yet. No place close to me has them unfortunately. If we can add Plex to there I’m sure we will.

Hopefully this gets implemented since Google TV will replace Android TV soon and I like Plex integration with Android TV currently. I really don’t want to lose that.

Actually I have a theory on how Google TV works with how implementation with other apps is concerned. I think Google TV only shows content that Google Play Movies (soon turning to Google TV app) has access to. Since the list of app support for universal searching is the same on Google TV as is Google Play Movies, I think it’s safe to assume there won’t be Plex integration. Same thing for if I want to see if Vudu has a movie, I can’t since Google Play Movies doesn’t support Vudu.
If this is true, then this is such a downgrade since we’re missing features that was here before.

You can side-load the new Google TV launcher on an old android TV box; I have it on my Tivo Stream 4k.

Yes, Ples, please, you need to update Plex functionality to deal with this new interface. here are 2 significant things I notice:

  1. Plex no longer shows up in any of the new searches. Google has completely re-worked the search for this platform (there is a whole new search app to download if you side-load it), and none of the Plex shows show up in any searches :frowning:

  2. The recommendations rows are completely gone, and there is a supposedly much more intelligent detail on the main “For you” screen, which no longer shows what is available by app category (i.e. there is no Plex, or Netflix row); instead it mixes material from several sources into categories, e.g. "here are all your “Crime TV” shows that you like. Plex no longer shows up in any of these rows.

Google have plans to make this the default launcher for all Android TV boxes eventually, so Plex…please, please start working on it if you didn’t already.

Just to blow your theory away; It shows me all the stuff that is on my personal DVR from YouTube TV. It can access things that are specific to me, not just available on everyone’s streaming service. I expect it uses the same methodology as before, it is just asking the backgrounded app (in this case the Plex App for Android TV) to return the search results. The app itself needs to support this. Plex did this before, but I assume the whole api interface has changed, and now they need to recode it. :frowning:

I’ve just confirmed that the content from there will only be online content. It won’t get specifics from an app. We might be able get our free streaming stuff on there but content from your local server will not show up. This is a limitation from Google due to it being populate by an online content catalogue that Google curates and not by apps themselves…

I imagine your youtube DVR content is is still considered streaming due to Google running the servers it is on.

I am moving this out of the Feature Suggestion to the General Discussion area because it can’t happen. ( something wrong with forum releasing votes will move when i figure out what wrong)

i did replace Android TV Home launcher for the Google TV Home launcher

on my TCL 55EC780 Android TV and am notise this as well, Plex dosent list.

If am get to guess i think its connected to Deep link and the Search frome home screen functions some has ben existing for a while, and mabye Identify columns.

You are wrong Google TV dosent replace Android TV.

Google TV is just a launcher

Android TV 5.0 to 7.0 Android TV Launcher
Android TV 8.0 to 10.0 Android TV Home
Android TV 9.0 to 11.0 Google TV Home

All devices with Android TV 9.0 or higre will be change the launcher within 2 year.
so Google TV dosent replace Android TV, they just rebranding it with a launcher.

And if i know Google into Android TV 12, 13 mabye 14 they just rebrand it with new launcher again.

damn that’s a real shame, looking like lots of us will be holding onto the ‘old’ launcher UI for as long as possible!
I’ve tried the new launcher on my Shield but it’s just giving me so many irrelevant streaming suggestions for apps that I don’t have subscriptions for, pretty damn awful:(

I’m just guessing, and that’s not a fact, but if google had not planned for this change by simple update with Android TV 9.0, it probably would not have given the launcher minium API level at 9.0 but started maybe from 10.0, where the Android The TV Home launcher applies to a minimum of 8.0 to 10.0, and I think the focus is on maximizing the number of devices running Google TV Home, thus setting the API level to a minimum of 9, to maximize the number of devices over time.

But they cold just have release the launcher update direclty as well to Android TV Home launcher then devices frome 8.0 would have it alredy.

Hey!

I’ve been a Plex user for a while, and I really like how there are players for so many platforms! However, I’ve recently purchased one of Google’s newly revealed Chromecast with Google TVs.

One of the selling points for that device is the unified interface for browsing movies and TV shows from multiple different services in once place. Now, while I do use multiple services for my media, my primary source is my Plex server, and I’m wondering if we can expect there to be an official Plex integration/app for the Google TV, or if we will just have to rely on casting our media, as with the previous generations of Chromecast devices.

If there will be an app, I’d also be curious about the timeframe for its release. Is it just something that is planned? Is there something already in the works? Is there going to be something ready upon the release?

As a developer myself I understand that it may take a while, since there may be more work than it would initially appear, so I’m not expecting anything to be ready for the release (but if something was ready for that I’d be stoked of course), I’m just curious if there’s something planned, and if there is, if there’s an estimated timeframe for its public release.

Edit: after taking a look at these two existing threads (one and two) some of my questions have been answered. It looks like there will be a Plex app available: the existing Plex for Android TV app, and that the content on the for you tab isn’t influenced by local apps (i.e.: no Plex recommendations). However, I am still curious to see if when selecting one of the options on that tab, when choosing which service to watch it on (I haven’t received my new device yet, so I’m not sure how the interface works exactly) if Plex will be listed as an option if you have that piece of media on your Plex media server.

Nope. It won’t know what content you have on your PMS so it won’t recommend Plex as a choice.

If I was Plex, I would be pushing Google hard on making local content available.
For me, not having this functionality will negatively impact my use of Plex since GTV appears to no longer have Channels and the Play Next section.
Plex, do you know if you have access to the ‘Library’ tab? Or is everything on the front-end now off limits?

They are. It’s the same limitation preventing Plex from integrating with Google Home.

I don’t have nay information on that. The devs haven’t dug that deep into Google TV yet to know for sure on anything.

I have the same issues

  1. You cannot search for a movie and it list Plex as an available source to watch the movie on if you have in your library.
  2. It does not show in your “For You” tab or any type of recommendation.

Plex is listed as “searchable” under settings and the option is turned on, yet its not searchable. I noticed a plex employee saying that google cannot look into the plex library for content, just streaming videos. However, It worked on android tv at one time, it showed “watch now on plex” as an option for viewing.

The current Android TV, such as on the Shield, does allow accessing content through the local app. The Google TV interface is different. It searches for that content automatically from it’s list of cloud providers. It’s not something the Plex app can provide.
