Clarification on OS Support for Hardware Transcoding

Hoping for some clarification before I waste a bunch of time.

I currently have an I5-3570k with an NVIDA GT 630 card running Windows Server 2016. Everything I read indicates that I should be able to do hardware transcoding but I cannot seem to make it work. I know my system is older so I am not going to spend time trying to make it work, just going to upgrade it.

My problem is I cannot seem to determine if Hardware Transcoding is supported on Server 2016 or Server 2019 operating systems? With the new system I am going to use the integrated Intel graphics (at least at first).

Is Quicksync & Plex compatible with Server 2016/2019 for hardware transcoding?

Thanks much for any feedback.

Both the 3570K and GT 630 do basic h.264 and not very well at that.

From a driver perspective you will be better off with server 2019 especially if you pick up a i5-8xxx,9xxxx.

I will definitely do 2019 but are you able to confirm that the transcoding should indeed work on “Windows server 2019”. That’s my real hold up, I just can’t find a definitive “Yes that should work”

Thanks

The officially answer would be Windows 10/Server 2012R2. I don’t have another machine to start up Server 2019 and there are many variables that could make it a success or not.

Tiebierius - Thanks for the reply I appreciate your input.

Can anyone who is actually running Server 2019 chime in and confirm they are able to make Hardware Transcoding work on that platform? That or a Plex employee could maybe confirm that it does (or at least should) work?

I am really just trying to confirm it isn’t impossible due to an OS limitation or something before I spend days beating my head on it.

Anyone using Server 2019 & Hardware Transcoding?

Can anyone tell me if this should (might) work? Firing up new hardware this weekend and don’t want to waste time on Server 2019 if there is no chance of it working at all.

Thanks

If you load the standard GUI and stay away from Hyper-V I would say you have greater than 50% chance of working. Don’t run Plex as a service.

One annoying factor is that some motherboards insist on having a monitor(or dummy plug) connected.

How had you planned on setting it up, reason for choosing Server over Windows 10?

I am using server because I do run a bunch of Hyper-V VM’s. As long as there is some chance it will work and not a hard no “because” I will give it a shot. There is no specific reason I cannot run 10 if I have to.

Thanks - You confirmed there is a chance it can work so I am good.
