Anybody know if classifying movies by director is possible? I mean doing it by the automatic metadata retrieval process, not by adding the director information manually.

if you mean, can you display directors (or actors for that matter) instead of movies, then unfortunately no.
you can create autoplaylists through using filters (use a custom filter, then click the add to playlist button).
so you can add your favorite directors to filter > then save that to a playlist for easier access.

That certainly is a helpful first step. Is there anyway to sort/group all your movies by director? Similar to an alphabetical or by release year criteria but by director.
not that I am aware of, but I wish we could.
more specifically I wish we could view by actors (or simply by people).
ie
movies > view by people > people list
click on person > show movies that involve that person (actor/director/producer/whatever)
